    hi there

I ll be renting an Audi R8 for a weekend soon, and was wondering if you can suggest some good roads for driving around

I was thinking the Highlands (Scotland) but I was there before, there might be places just as pretty but specially interesting to drive

NOTE: not sure how high the R8 is.

I'd be more concerned about the prolific speed camera's, and tickets. It's v v easy to speed in it.

    High ??

It makes my Porsche look like a Jeep :D

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I mention height because I remember quite a few speed bumps

I was thinking speed cameras too... again this is why I m askign here, there must be other mental people that decide blowing some money on a dream was worth it, wanting to learn from their experience

There are some nice roads up near the Cairn Gorms in Scotland and lots of them in Wales. Shouldn't be a problem finding out to be honest.

The Cairn Gorms were very twisty and narrow though at times. I had to stop the rental to give it time to cool on one occasion as I was pushing it a bit hard.

The fastest car in the world is a rental you know. Also regarding speed camera in Scotland they are well marked and in sensible areas....the traffic cops are also nice and speed friendly it would appear after this weekend.....as long as your not a loon of course

You wont get a massive mileage allowance on an R8 I would have thought. Alot of the rental deals only suit cruising around london.
Alot of the rental companies are based in london too & charge additional for pickup outside of London.
I briefly looked into this myself but decided against. Money would be better spent on some form of track event IMO

If it's your first time driving such a powerful car, the last thing you want to be doing is who-ering around backroads in the highlands. Driving a car like an R8 is nothing at all like driving a normal fast car. They are a completely different animal.

    Take it easy.

Where abouts are you renting it from, no point in anyone suggesting some nice roads 400 miles away.

According to the stats, it's 49.3" vs 50.2", with the R8 being lower

@separate: it would be indeed, the first time driving this kind of car, what would you suggest then?

if you want to avoid speed cameras (and driving off a cliff) but still want to open her up a bit, (unless it's changed recently) the M6 has very few (if any) speed cameras on it and is generally light on the piggy front.

not that you'd be worrying about that as you wouldn't be speeding at all, just saying. ;)

Any particular reason you're renting in the Uk? If you're going to rent a car like the R8 I would have thought it would be money better spent renting one in Germany and driving the Autobahn.

Depends on how fast you like to drive :)

Novelty wears off quick, the thrill and enjoyment comes from the visual, audible and sensary sensations from accelertion, braking and cornering.

Driving an R8 at top speed down an Autobahn all day would be a class for the 1st hour, tiring by the 2nd as the concentration required will take it out of you, extremly financially punishing by the 3rd when you need more petrol. I'd say the novelty would have worn off by lunchtime.

Try the A6 between Matlock and Buxton.More of a bikers run though.

Well nice scenic routes are well and good, but just don't go pushing the car until you're used to how it reacts. You won't be used to it in a weekend though.

Personally, I found the R8 very underwhelming to drive. I had driven a TTRS before the R8, and I didn't feel like i was in a 'supercar' after switching. Don't get me wrong, the R8 is obviously more powerful and is going to be a better drive around a track, but toddling along on the road, the TTRS is probably the better drive... purely because the R-Tronic box in the R8 was awful (IMO).

The steering wheel, clocks, seats and loads of other stuff is identical (or at least very very similar) to the TTRS (and the TTS i think?). It doesn't really feel much different. As opposed to say a Ferarri or Lamborghini - where they just feel completly bespoke.

Most of the south of England is fantastic for driving apart from the insane amount of speed cameras.
-absolute must is an up to date GPS with the camera warnings switched on-

I took my AMV8 to Wales from the south of England but didnt do the famous mountain run. The Welsh police chief is apparently a Nazi on speed tourists. The highlands might be nice, but its a long drive up there.

    Have fun!

Take a cheeky ferry over to the Isle of Man and bob's your uncle.

I doubt if the hire terms would allow you take the car out of the UK (unfortunately) never mind take it out of the EU.
