Hi, can anyone please advise me: I have a whirlpool built under single oven 595x595x595. At the base (below the oven door) there is a wooden slat that matches the kitchen cabinets and below that at floor level there is a wooden "plinth" that runs along the rest of the kitchen in both directions. I'd like to have a double oven instead, so can I replace the single with a double built under ? many thanks! Also, is it best to replace the aging hob above the oven at the same time, seeing as everythings going to be disconnected and pulled anyway? Thankyou

The electric oven will be connected to the mains supply from behind so it will come out without disturbing the hob. It's not a big deal to temporarily pull out a single oven to change the hob later so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I almost made a big mistake when changing my oven a few weeks ago. When the old oven was delivered in 1989 it came with a cable attached and I wired it into the feed unit on the wall. Before the new oven arrived I was about to disconnect the cable from the wall which was going to be a big hassle because of accessibility but the fitter who was doing other work for me said that the new oven would come with no cable (which was true) so I should disconnect the cable from the old oven end instead and then connect the cable to the new oven which was 1,000 times easier than switching it at the other end, I almost kissed him!

Go to one of the electrical showrooms, grab one of the brochures for any of the built-in oven manufacturers, make sure the installation/planning guide is included, bring it home and check the dimensions. In general terms all built-in units (especially single and double ovens) are the same size.

coylemj, thanks for your response and especially the mains cable tip :) So theoretically, whereas the single built under oven sits above ground on some kind of raised framework within the housing, the double would sit directly on the ground with an indent at the base of the appliance for the base plinth so it blends in with the rest of the fitted units.

I had hoped to grab a bargain online so rather than shop around instore I should be ok as long as I ensure the height of the double oven is within the limits of the housing ie from the floor to the underside of the worktop? (Presumably width, depth should be standard but will still double check regardless)
    Thanks again

just another tip -when shopping for your oven remember that a built in double oven and a built under double oven at different products

Built under comes with the slide rails for the oven to sit on

built in are generally the type you see at raised height

    Can be different dimensions also

I'll window shop first so I have a clearer idea of what's what before googling for a bargain, so I'm better prepared and less likely to buy something totally inappropriate.
    Thanks for the tips!

Just on double under ovens, the two compartments are quite small individually.
I wanted to get one to replace our single built in oven but having researched a bit I couldn't find one that the compartments were a decent size.
They seem to be considerably smaller than regular double ovens.

Just in case you do a lot of cooking!

That's a good point borderlinemeath. I've only ever used a freestanding double oven before this one and miss the convenience of only having to preheat a small oven for a small meal which is what we usually need. However, when the mood takes me, I do cook alot. So, now I'm undecided;keep the single built under or buy a double built under...when I can afford it lol
    Thankyou

    Hello
I have exactly the same dilemma. I am used to two ovens in a free standing cooker, and have been shopping for a built under double oven. But in the ones available, both ovens are so small!
So it's a free standing, which doesn't look as good as the built in, but has a lot more cooking space, or a built in double, or a built in single... with hob.
I would be very grateful for advice from anyone with a built under double oven, are they big enough?
    Thank you
    Lucy
