DTT without aerial. Delighted

    Hi,

I've been researching DTT heavily over the last few weeks in order to advise my parents on their installation options. I was home today and noticed that my parents' new TV supported mpeg4 and decided to try and chance my arm. They have UPC (But just the analogue service via cable).

I found that I had to enable the DVB and DVB-HD channels in the TV's setup menu. (Panasonic TX-L32S20L: 32 inch LCD Viera HD) And Voila! There were all the channels which I could switch to back and forth from the analogue ones. It seems that the cabling in the house captures a significant enough signal without an antenna.

To try and make sure I wasn't going mad I decided to disconnect the UPC feed in the attic. Sure enough, the analogue signal went... the digital remained.

I can't sample any HD channels though. Do RTE have a schedule for HD broadcasts?

    Marc

    May for HD. See http://www.saortv.info/2011/02/22/rte-saorview-presentation/

You do need an aerial or it will be prone to freeze or pixalate/Block randomly.

Thanks for the info. I still think it's ridiculous that it actually works so well the way it is. Looks like I'll get away with sticking a UHF arial in the attic.

It does significantly depend on location Watty. Large parts of south Dublin for example will enjoy ridiculous signal strengths by the time ASO is complete. All of Drogheda will need some sort of loft aerial as minimum. Many parts of Carlingford and especially Omeath in Louth will require Saorsat if they don't have a sea view to the south.

    Yes, but not no aerial.
    see http://maps.techtir.com/ireland-dtt.htm

AFAIK RTE plots for 10dB Chimney height outdoor aerial.

Loft aerials can be poor. There MUST be a margin in case of bad weather, interference etc.

    Probably loads of mistakes.,

    Clicky anywhere on main map.

on sub maps you can click near edges to move to next map.
