I'm thinking of buying a new lense (see link) for my 400D. I just have the basic kit at the moment but want to buy a lense with a bit more zoom, etc.

Will this lense work with the 400D as I see it says Note! Only fits on the EOS Digital Rebel Series or 20D, 30D, 40D & 50D SLR cameras.

Your advice would be appreciated. If this post is in the wrong area I apologise.

Yup, the 55-250mm EF-S lens would be compatible with your Canon 400D.

Yes, it will work. The 400D is part of 'Rebel' series of cameras.

Some additional information - you'll note if you take off your lens, that on the metal ring there are two coloured dots, one red and one white. Canon lenses with the "EF-S" name generally have a white on the edge, and you line up the white dots to mount the lens. A second group of lenses have a red dot, and line up with the red dot on the lens mounting ring. These are "EF" lenses.

EF-S lenses are exclusively digital (APS-C) lenses, while "normal" EF lenses can be used on all film, APS-C and full fram digital cameras.

I have a EOS 30 film body, and it won't accept the EF-S lens, while my 400D will accept any lens from both ranges.

I won't go into "apparent" focal lengths, since the APS-C frame size, which is smaller than film/full frame, makes EF lenses on the digital body slightly different.
