"Next Signing Day" ...?

Sorry for the total n00b question, but what exactly do I have to do on my "next signing day" as stated on by JB receipt?

I have to do this tomorrow. Do I need to go to the Welfare Office? Need to bring anything with me? Presume welfare card, but anything else?

Also, is it likely to take long?

And if this entails me going to the Welfare Office, is it possible to get the PO where I collect my JB changed? There are a couple of small POs that are closer that facilitate JB, that I wasn't aware of when I made my application. The queues at the Square can be horrendous.

You go to your social welfare office at the time told to you when you first signed on, probably got it written on a card somewhere. You have to go sign on at this time, you queue up for the hatch that has your surname letter (or however they do it in your office, there'll be a sign anyway). Its exactly what it says...you sign a card and you're done All you need is your welfare card.

How long it takes depends, if you get there early you can be top of the queue but still have to wait for the particular time for it to open. Theres usually a big queue but once the hatch opens it starts moving...everyone is just there to sign their name.

yes you can change your post office, i did for one closer to me, go to enquiries or information at the social welfare office and they should do it for you.

JB? Jobseekers benefit? If so, you should be able to get it changed, it might take over a week though.

Signing on just means you get your social welfare card, go to the office, find the queue (usually ask at the reception if you're lost, or find the longest line :P), go to the hatch, present your card, sign your name and the date and leave (with your card).

If you're signing on in the morning, fraid so. The morning queue does be there for at least 30 minutes before the feckin' place opens.

If it's the afternoon and you don't mind taking a gamble, leave about 1:15 (in order to get there by 1:30), hopefully you'll either have no queue and the hatch is opened (if they open early, mine does) or you'll be done by 2:15 if there is a queue.

Small edit: Noo, you sure about that? I thought we all had specific signing on times from now on?
    Ignore that, I misread. :o

OP, did you have to sign on before? If not, ring them or go to them today and ask what time you're to sign on at.

Thanks for the replies. Doesn't sound too traumatic!

I had another look, and did find a letter I'd received from them at the end of last year; was in the wrong folder!:o The time is down for all day basically, 9:30-12, and 2-4, at hatch 5 or S, I'm sure I'll be able to figure that one out :D

Yep, first time having to "sign", I applied around the 28th Dec, IIRC. The "Signing Arrangements" on the letter says every 4 weeks, but it will have been 8 weeks I think since I applied - maybe from now on it will be every 4 weeks.

Dunno about the queues for signing, but the queues at the PO are pretty bad, so want to try changing the PO; will enquire about that when I'm in tomorrow.

I'm sure I can find the info if I do a search, but if anyone wants to answer, I notice on another letter I got from them about that they may ask "from time to time" about my efforts to find work. How often or soon after applying for benefit is this likely to come up?

    Thanks again.

    all of the above!!!
...one question though, last time i signed on the notice over the hatch said "next signing day 22/02" (in dodge marker) the things is I have always signed on on a wednesday every 4 weeks and always collect my money on a wednesday, surely this notice was a mistake as 22/02 is today..... I've never heard of signing on on a different day to the one that payments are made available

Check the receipt that you got from the post office when you last collected money-that will have your next sign in date.I'm pretty sure there is more than one sign on date in the welfare office depending on your surname ie. my surname begins with C and when I am signing on it seems to only ever be A-C.That might explain why there was a sign on day today, but also one tomorrow.

Because I get rent allowance as well it always says n/a as regards next signing day on receipt, in Galway City there is no division by surname etc just given a day and time to come in....ah well not to worry, if I missed because of their change to the usual day I sign then it'll be easy to sort out..er, I hope:cool: cheers though for the response

You're welcome. Now, you might remember when you got a letter the first time to fill out: address, name, jobs you might like, can you work full time and the last sheet was a small section for you to fill in about jobs that you applyed for. That's all it is. Can be done in two days max if you are honestly looking for jobs. I only got one since I've been on it; it really isn't a big deal.

Well, if you can sign on at either time, I'd pop down about 1:15pm and go for there (unless you want to try early morning).

Just either call or go down tomorrow for safety sakes. And it should have had the date printed on the window when you last signed on.
