Windows 7 install problem

I just built myself a new pc. I got it up and running on xp working fine, but I wanted to put Windows 7 on it to see if I like it. So I did an install from restart, it loads for a few minutes but then prompts me with a screen saying something like it cannot load the device and asks to browse for drivers. I downloaded what I think is my drivers for my CD/DVD drive (Samsung SH-S223C) but browsing to this on a usb does not work.

Sorry I do not have the actual error message I'm in work now but I'll post a pic later. I'm just wondering does anyone know what this might be and and what I should do to troubleshoot it?

    Thanks for your help :)

Plop in the driver disc that came with your motherboard... Chances are it'll search the entire disc and and find the appropriate driver automatically.
If that doesn't work, the exact message would be handy...

Kind of weird that XP could detect the hardware but Windows 7 couldn't though:confused:

    /edit
I have that exact DVD drive and had no such problems with my Windows 7 installation, so I'd say you can rule that out...

Good idea thanks tman, I did not think of using my motherboard disk. Yes it was confusing to me too, I tried Win7 on the beta last year and found it brilliant at finding drivers etc. It was a weird message about device drivers I have never seen before, at at the very beginning before any real install started. I just assumed it was in relation to the CVD drive - but maybe not as it got it that far with the Win7 DVD, not sure what else it could be really though. I'll post up a pic later, cheers

OK I tried this again. Booted from the disk from start, and the first screed you come to this is - see attached images.

I inserted my motherboard disk but it didn't find anything.

    Any ideas?

Why not try this instead? It might overcome the problem in a roundabout way.

Retail and no I'm happy to do a complete wipe.

Tried that USB method but when I run diskpart it only finds my hard drive and cannot see my usb even though it appears fine in windows. hmmm

Now that I think of it, I did my install from a USB stick using the method above, so I guess it must be due to missing DVD drive drivers
Booted from the DVD the other day and got as far as the install/repair options though, does it come up after that stage for you?

The USB method is great if you've got a spare 4GB one lying around

Have you considered installing VirtualBox in XP and then installing W7 in that?

I have successfully installed W7 and several Linux OS's in VirtualBox from the iso files.

the only thing it needs is sata drivers to complete the OS install so i would guess thats what you need.
put the drivers on a USB drive and you should be good to go.
not sure why it would work on xp unless you had slipstreamed the drivers or have upgraded since

Are there generic drivers I could try? Can anyone point me to some drivers I can try putting on a usb?
    Thanks for your help

Is it a Sata DVD drive by any chance?

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 12,616 Mod ✭✭✭✭Zascar

Yep it's a SATA DVD Drive. It is a Samsung Drive, model TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223C
    Are Sata drives different?

I just went and borrowed another hard drive, formatted it and tried the install again. Same problem. So it has to be the DVD drive. I just wish I'd picked a different one now...

Bizarre... Been meaning to reinstall Windows as mine seems to be a bit of a botched install, so I'll give it a go and let you know the results (I have that exact drive)

Might be worth searching for tsstcorp drivers rather than samsung ones

Thanks. I'm told it could be a bad burn of the dvd so I'm trying the USB way, but not having much luck so far

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

Yeah, sounds like it could be a dud burn possibly...
Had a few (different) problems due to selecting EFI mode for my DVD drive in the BIOS by mistake, but after I corrected that it's now installing away happily.

I used the gui tool for creating the bootable USB tool btw (had a few issues with the command line version too...)
Had to use another tool to modify the ISO before it would accept it though, so if you get an error, post it here and I should be able to dig up a link

    Good luck!

Thanks. That microsoft one does not work for me, I#, using UltraISO and I think I might have got it to work, its burning at least.

One thing, I noticed in my bios I have an option for hard drive and dvd, but i did not see one for usb. Do I have to enable this?

On mine it usually doesn't show up unless I've actually got the USB device plugged in when you go into the BIOS, then it'll let you select "Sandisk Cruzer" or whatever your drive is as a boot option

If not, you could be in for a whole new world of head****s!:o
