RTW ticket- am I better off booking one way tickets?

I'm going on a rtw trip starting this summer- well actually just Asia and Aus/ New Zealand! Have been looking into RTW ticket prices but I'm getting quotes of 2200+ for what is essentially a return ticket to Australia with a stopover on each leg of the trip. I basically want to get to BKK and make my own way around Asia from there, then get from Singapore or Bali to Aus, then Aus to NZ and then home. I'm now thinking of booking one way tickets myself as according to my research on skyscanner that would work out at around 1200 but without the flexibility of a rtw ticket....

Anyone have any other ideas on this?

Fly Ryanair to London and Air Asia to KL then to Bkk, travel to Bali overland and fly from there to Darwin again with Air Asia. I priced this going the opposite direction a few weeks back and it was less than $900US. Just book the flights a few months in advance.
