Should The Netherlands become a Republic

I’ve always wondered if The Netherlands was on the verge of removing the monarchy, and many of its perhaps antiquated vestiges, in order to become a Republic like the United States and France.

I know that the Dutch media in general does not tow to Dutch Republicans, or the concept of ridding The Netherlands of the monarchy, but there seems to be many websites on the internet surrounding the issue, and while it is safe to say that such individuals may not as of yet constitute a majority in Holland, that there would appear to be a growing sentiment in certain sections of The Netherlands with regard to the continuation of the monarchy.

Could, or should The Netherlands become a Republic - and could you ever see this happening, if not in our lifetimes, perhaps sometime over the duration of the 21st century?

Well if it means no chance of another King Billy then let a republic roll forth! ;)

Poor idea for a parody thread to be honest. If someone disagrees with the British monarchy they'll probably disagree with the Dutch one as well.

I think the correct thread should be about all countries becoming a republic, not just the UK or the Netherlands.

Fwiw, I think the UK monarchy will become mire like the Dutch and Belgian monarchies. Lower key, less expensive etc.

I always find the French somewhat confusing on this issue. They are very proud of their republic, but also still very proud if Napoleon. How can you be a republic, but have an emperor?

Not necessarily, people areound here get all worked up about the British monarchy but don't pass a comment about any others.

How can you regard Hitler as one of the most evil men ever, but regard Cromwell as one of the greatest Britons ever?

    <gallic shrug> People are strange </gallic shrug>.

Having worked in Holland for over a year, I found the locals to be very proud of their monarchy and very pro-monarchy. So in a word, unlikely.

    No!

Can't have the home of King Billy being a republic.

Because we have little exposure to them. If we had regular access to Dutch or Belgian tv and newpaper we'd probably pass comment on their politics a lot more.

But we can have King Billy himself supported by the Pope (Alexander VIII) at the Battle of the Boyne.

    Of course! Perfectly logical.

That was just a misunderstanding. No biggie.

Monarchy in any form is outdated and should be phased out. This apply's to the UK and all other states, It is up to the people in each respective country to decide that for themselves, but I personally think that Monarchy will slowly fade as a system of government over the next century.
