Unsure situation

    Hi

Hopefully somebody might clarify this situation for me. Social welfare office local don't seem to answer phone

I was let go from employment on 8th feb. Went to SW office and next available appointment is 8th march so I'm struggling massively with Febuarys bills.

I was offered one day a week work but my mam and two other people have told me if I take the work I am not available to work full time therefore don't qualify for the dole.

Do I have to be in receipt of dole payments before I can accept the one day work in other to get casual workers or can I take the one day, get full dole backdated from 8th feb to first work day nd then casual from first work day onwards.

How much dole is lost with one day work.

Is the one day earning relevant to whether you got casual? I.e do they calculate in if I got €10 or a €1000 for the one day?

    That's it for now thanks..

hi, it all depends on what type of payment you will qualify for. For expample if you qualify for the regular job seekers allowance of 186 per week and you have no children you cannot work, at all. If you are stuck for money while waiting for your claim to come through your community welfare officer in your catchment area will usually give you your weekly payment. However this means that if you were initally going to be getting your payments back dated from the day you made your application, this would no longer be the case. And in regard to the job offer from your mam, well couldnt she pay you in cash. Then it would be some extra cash for you and since you wont be offically "employed" it wont cause problems with your social welfare claim. Hope this helps.

Is it JSA or JSB you are applying for? You can work one day a week and still have entitlement to payments. You need to go to your sw office and let them know that you will be employed 1 day per week, they will then re-categorise your claim to casual and you will have to send in dockets every week stating the number of days worked. You will also be given forms for you employer to fill out intially. If its JSB and you are entitled to €188 a week then you will lose €31.33 of this per day you work and you can only work up to a maximum of 3 days a week otherwise you will have no entitlement. If its JSA your earnings from this employment will be treated as means and if you are already awaiting a means assessment it would be impossible to give you a ball park figure of what your entitlement will be until the original means testing figure comes back.

Just to clarify you can work if you are in receipt of JSA. Plus getting cash in hand while receiving benefits is fraud.

Sorry I wasn't very clear, my Mam isn't offering the one day, she just commented on the effect it might have on claiming dole

I am only allowed JSA as I worked in the UK in 2008 & 2009 and havnt credits or transferred credits from UK.

I have one child and they are means testing my partners income as we live together.

I would be receiving approx €300 through the books for the days work so as casual work and this sum being greater than €186 I would not be in a position to claim JSA.

The one day is not gaurenteed every week there I am sceptical of taking it up if it effects the dole.

The maximum you will be entitled to on JSA is your personal rate, adult dependent and child dependent...which would total €342 that is without your partners earnings being assessed. Im sorry I cannot be more helpful.

If only it was 2 days work available. Still wouldn't cover the loss of been made redundant unfortunately.

In all seriousness though, you'd be daft not to take it. The dole is only around €200 a week. You said your partner works, so your dole would be reduced there already.

You could earn around €300 for a day. To me it's very easy decision.

As for being able to claim anything on top of that, I think you could possibly be entitled to child allowence, but I'm not totally certain how it works.

Bit of confusion going on here methinks. As far as I understand the OP's problem: he'll get one day of work (you can work a max of 19 hours ((maybe it's 20, but not more than 20 hours for sure)), any for any three days from monday to saturday (((sunday is not counted))))). Just go down and ask at the local SW office for the best info. Oh, if you do work for the one day, you'll get 5/6ths of the money you currently get.

OP is awaiting a means test for JSA his earnings will also be calculated as means as well as his wifes earnings so it is not as straight forward as JSB, with JSB you know that your entitlement will be 5/6ths of €188 for working one day if you are entitled to the top rate. With JSA his means have to be calculated and for every day he works xx amount will be deducted.

I do agree with RamblingRebel that OP should take the work available but that is a personal opinion.
