Hi Was wondering if someone would help me. Im using a knitting pattern for the first time and Ive just finished knitting 42 rows in stockinette stitch and the next set of instructions asks me to knit " to " four times. Does anybody know what this means? Knit what to what four times, its confusing! Does it just mean continue on in stockinette stitch for another four rows?

Can you type out the line of instructions with all asterisks, quotes etc in it, I don't think you have given us enough information.

knit " to " four times.

It means to knit whatever is inside the inverted commas (" " although it's usually asterix * *) 4 times, e.g.
*Knit 2 together, yarn forward*, Knit * to * four times

    hi guys,

Thanks for the responses. Ive typed out the knitting instructions below:

Using 4mm needles or 4mm circular needle if required and thumb method cast on 95 sts.

Working in st-st (throughout) proceed as follows.

1st Row Inc in 1st St, knit to last 2 sts, inc in next st, k1, 97 sts.
2nd Row Inc in 1st St, purl to last 2 sts, inc in next st, p1, 99 sts.
3rd Row Inc in 1st St, knit to last 2 sts, inc in next st, k1, 101 sts.
4th Row Inc in 1st St, purl to last 2 sts, inc in next st, p1, 103 sts.
5th Row Inc in 1st St, knit to last 2 sts, inc in next st, k1, 105 sts.
    6th Row Purl **
Rep 1st to 6th row 8 times more. 185 sts,

Work 8 rows inc 1 st at each end of every row as before. 201 sts.
    Work 0 rows without shaping.

Place a marker at each end of last row to indicate start of sleeves.

    SLEEVES
    Work 42 rows without shaping.

    Work from ** to ** 4 times.

THIS LAST BIT IS THE BIT IM GETTING STUCK ON. THE ONLY BRACKETS IN THE INSTRUCTIONS JUST GAVE THE AMOUNT OF ROWS ETC TO BE KNIT FOR THE OTHER SIZES. SO IM NOT SURE WHAT THIS LAST ROW MEANS.

Ok so you've made the body of the garment up as far as the underarms and your starting the sleeves.

When you did the body you did:

I think there was another ** before where it says 1st row.

    If so then knit:

1st Row Inc in 1st St, knit to last 2 sts, inc in next st, k1,
2nd Row Inc in 1st St, purl to last 2 sts, inc in next st, p1,
3rd Row Inc in 1st St, knit to last 2 sts, inc in next st, k1,
4th Row Inc in 1st St, purl to last 2 sts, inc in next st, p1,
5th Row Inc in 1st St, knit to last 2 sts, inc in next st, k1,
    6th Row Purl **

again but only 4 times not 8 times, then continue on to the next instruction.

Have to say it is a bit vague, is it an American/German pattern? Some of there are knit in 1 piece, but I never know what the piece is going to look like until I knit it!

yeh i know what you mean, its a SIRDAR pattern, from the address on the pattern it looks as though its an English pattern. Thats basically what im doing, knitting the whole thing and waiting to see what it turns out like.

Tralalanin - that is the second time you have posted this site on this forum recently and this is completely off topic. Friendly warning - please don't do this again.
