    Hi,

I'm on a holiday here in the US and I want to buy a few knives (under $70).
Would I have any troubles bringing them back to Ireland?
I mean I would put them in a checked baggage and whatnot but still.. is it legal?

    Thoughts?

A friend just brought back several knives for me from Cabelas last week, he had them in his checked bags and there was no problem.

Go right ahead..So long as they arent flick knife, balisong , push dagger style,or a sword stick, you are fine.

No problem as long as it's in your checked baggage, I think it's quite clear not to bring them on in your carry on. I've brought all types of weird things in my checked bags and had no problem, just stick a lock on the zips just incase the bag handlers decide your bag looks tempting;) and decide to have a quick frisk and cut themselves LOL no joke, had 2 brand new pairs of Pumas mysteriously dissappear in transit

locks wont make a difference. we came back from america and a woman with us had a lock on her bag. they cut the lock off and searched the bag and left it in a right mess, nothing missing though

I've brought some back in checked on luggage without any problems.

Locks on the zip won't make any difference. See video below of well known tactic of airport baggage handlers.

    Get these type of locks.
    http://www.masterlocktsa.com/apps/tsa/products-tsa-approved-locks/index.jsp

The TSA has master keys to open these locks without destroying them.
Unfortunatly ,that also means that any other criminal or wiseguy can proably make a key to or learn to shim a combo lock to still help themselves to your stuff and then the TSA gets the blame for nicking it.
So irrespective of what you put on your bag in airports security you are just playing lotto that it will arrive and arrive in one piece too.

If you're bringing in a normal hunting knife, you'll be fine. You do not have to declare it, just put it in your checked luggage.

Save yourself some time, here's one of the best deals out there

Buy a bit more and $150 spent gets you free shipping

+1 on not bothering with the locks. Having hopped back and forth as often as I do, TSA will cut your locks, and leave a lovely note for you.

I have not been stateside in years now.

I remember the roar of yer wan in Tx when she found a bottle of water in my carry on, well it was 37 degrees!

I just posted stuff back any way, was relatively cheap and arrived 2 days after I did

Can't beat US Mail, yer wan in the post office even helped me fill out the forms and explain which box size was the best value to ship!

Can't beat the Irish Brogue :D

    From the Revenue website:

Standard (Flat) Rate of Customs Duty
Customs Duty is charged at a standard rate of 2.5% on goods of a non-commercial nature provided that the value of goods subject to such duty does not exceed €700 per traveller. In determining if the total value exceeds €700, the monetary allowance of €430/€215, if applicable, and the value of goods not subject to Customs Duty are taken into account.
The standard rate does not apply to goods of a commercial nature or to tobacco products. Normal rates of VAT and Excise Duty (where applicable) apply.
Travellers may opt to have the goods cleared at the tariff rate of duty.
