Whats involved in the learners record section of the work experience module

    Hi everyone,
I am a mature student doing the IT plc course and I intend to return back to a third level college in September. I got permission from the current plc course tutor to qualify for the apeal mode of the work experience module. This means I have to submit the general assignment (20%) and the learners record (80%).I have worked for 15 years as a qualified electrician this work was relevent to the IT course as it involved wiring networks in hotels and factories and so on (our big project for the year was to design a community based wireless solution) I felt that I had a slight advantage with this but it was a challenge none the less.
I was just wondering could anyone point me in the right direction as to what the examiners are looking for in the lerners record section, where should I focus my attention when writing this, how long do I go on for. The module descriptor is a bit vague.........

    I would appreciate any pointers.

    Many thanks in advance

Your tutor will be correcting the module, not the External Examiner, so you should ask your tutor for more direction and support. Also check that the centre has permission to offer the APEAL mode - it is not at the say so of the tutor.

Thanks for getting back to me. I cleared it with my tutor at the start of the year and he assured me that it was possible to go with the APEAL mode he is also the course coordinator. I did not realise he would be correcting it. He is not the most approachable of fellows.I have re-read the module descriptor and it has the marking scheme, which is useful, so I think I will follow the guidelines set out there. I was just wondering did any body else here have to do the APEAL mode and could offer some advice.
Thanks again for the response Furtrher Ed.
    :) Much appreciated.

I realise that your Tutor cleared it for you but the centre must be approved for the APEAL method by FETAC. If you feel you can not approach the Tutor ask the FETAC Co-Ordinator because the External Examiner is within their rights to refuse approval of your module if the centre isn't destinated as an APEAL method centre.

Tutors correct all modules and the results are signed off on by either an External Examiner or External Authenticator - there are two different systems in use by FETAC at present. You will have the right to appeal both the process and result. This is important because your Tutor will ahve to give you your assessment instructions in writing and also a deadline etc. He/She can't just let you work it out yourself, or else you will have grounds for appeal.

Thanks again Further Ed for such a prompt reply. It's beginning to sound scary now!(lol). This is what is posted on the official course website:

"APEAL (Acreditation of Prior Experience And Learning) Mode: Complete the "Learner Record" - worth 80% of the marks and described in the module descriptor - as well as the General Assignment above. NB This option is only available to students with extensive prior experience of work and have prior permission from their tutor to take this option. Students taking this option are required to attend College as normal.

This looks to me like it is possible(why mention it if the center does not offer it) and surely when I asked him the situation he would have mentioned that the centre does not offer it. He told me he was once an extern for fetac so I'm sure he knows the system quite well.

Anyway this is due in on wednesday next week both the learner record and the assignment so i'm cutting it fine if it turns out that I cant avail of this mode. Most of the class did the work expierence for the last two weeks I even helped one of them secure a job for that duration from my old employer............

Anyway it seems like I have some more checking up to do I will consult the fetac coordinator.

Thank you again Further Ed you are a great help and very informative..
    Much obliged..
