Could somebody explain the process of the transfer of votes?

I'm not exactly sure how they are distributed and don't want to be giving votes to those I don't want too.

    Thanks

I would like clarification too, I thought I got it but the election simulator confused me.

Say I vote for someone guaranteed to get knocked out early, my 2nd pref should definitely get my vote assuming they're still in yeh? Just the simulator put it in the non transferable group

To this Id say just don't give anyone you don't want to give your vote too a preference!

As far as I understand, when a candidate is elminated their votes all go to the next preference. When a candidate goes over the quota a random selection of their next preferences are distributed.

    Its probably more complicated.

yes, its as clear as mud!!
THe method for the calculation of transfers is not clear from this- packets/parcels are not defined with sufficient clarity. Basically if your 1st preference is elected with a huge margin your 2nd preference may or may not be used in the transfer process- this is a pure lottery and may result in a candidate you haven't choosen being elected.
Hopefully as the 2nd preferences will be evenly distributed based upon peoples beliefs, sampling theory should result in the correct candidates being elected based upon the transfers.
I have used sampling theory with actual experimental data in the past and it generates a very accurate approximation of the mean/ sd that you would arrive at using traditional stats.

Thats about it in a nutshell!
