How useful is the extra 16GB memory?

Hi all, tried to not start a new thread (I promise I had loads of questions about networks that I searched and found some answers!) but this one is a bit trickier to look for..!

I'm buying an iPhone 4 with Vodafone's €45 p/m plan on Saturday. It's €279 for a 16GB handset, but €379 for a 32GB handset. I'm just wondering if it's worth the extra €100 for the 16GB extra memory? I suppose it depends on what you're using it for - I've got an 80GB iPod classic that I've had for about 3 years and it's got about 75GB of music on it. Even if I wanted to I couldn't use the iPhone as my sole music player, I really like having my whole library to choose from with me, so to be honest I'm not going to be filling it up with music. Might put a small choice few albums on it but I'm gonna be keeping my iPod.

I suppose I would like to use it for TV shows/movies, but this isn't essential. Aside from data heavy movies and music, is extra space necessary, in terms of phone speed, space for apps, other saved info, etc?

    Thanks for any help! :)

    Edit: Also, one more thing!

    I was reading this thread:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056180862&highlight=32gb

Which was talking about any rumoured iPhone 5. Is this the same story? I don't really wanna 'hold out' for a new model to be released when it's in summer. Even then, if it came out in summer, €300 seems a lot literally to just upgrade your handset from a 4 to a 5 (or 4S, or whatever it's called).

    This article: http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/iphone-5-rumours-what-you-need-to-know-721534
seems to suggest also that we won't be seeing a massive overhaul of the phone, more so just memory increase (as was mentioned by Seamus in the above boards thread) and maybe speed, camera improvements, etc.

It depends on your own personal circumstances, if you only have 4gb of music then 32gb is too much. But you'll always add to it mi have a 32gb one and am very very close to full.

Almost filled mine with music, photos and apps/games alone. Very nice to not have to worry about space.

Yeah I'd a 16gb 3GS previously and it filled in no time, if you have TomTom, Music and a few apps on it, it'll fill up pretty quickly

I've a 16GB that's fairly constantly full. To be fair I put a whole pile of music on it that I never listen to. I've whittled it down to stuff that I'll actually listen to and I've about 2GB free.

If I used it for movies or something, I can see how 16GB would be far too little.

If you're going to buy a phone now, you're tied to it for at least 18 months, maybe 24 depending on your contract. The extra 16GB is worth it.

Hmmm, seems like about 16GB or so is just on the button of what's necessary. Not sure if I'm gonna pay the extra 100e to double it...

thanks a million for all the responses though, much appreciated! If anyone else sees this, feel free to post whether you reckon 32GB is necessary!

Not worth the extra €100 - just manage your music with playlists - just sync the playlists

Don't forget that when it comes to selling the phone on adverts or similar the 32gb does command a much bigger price than the 16gb version. So you may just get most of the 100e back then.

That's a very good point. Quick question re: upgrading - if Apple released an iPhone 5, is there any decent trade in scheme with current phones? And if you do upgrade, do you give them you iPhone 4 (presumably for them to sell on refurbished) in exchange for a cheaper price on the (potential) iPhone 5?

No. If you buy from a network now you'll be in an 18 month or 24 month contract. So you won't be far enough into your contract to qualify doran upgrade when the 5 comes out in approx October.

Even if you could upgrade the network doesn't take the old phone back.

Ah ok I see. So theoretically, in 18 months time, my contract runs out, the iPhone 5 is well in stores - I can upgrade to it (at some sort of reduced price?) and keep my iPhone 4 to sell? This makes a big difference tbh, cos the extra memory probably would enable me to sell it for more.

Don't forget that in 18 months time, you will most likely be talking about the iPhone 6. ;)

As for the memory, I find 16gb too little. I have approx 20gb of music, so I need the 32gb.

    I have a 32gig and only have 1.5gb free!
I confess to at least half of that being photos which are also on my computer.

As the old saying goes, "A blank page never refused ink..."

In other words if you have 16Gb you'll fill it and if you have 32Gb you'll fill it.

I have over 100Gb of music and the same again in movies and TV shows, plus photo's apps and Tom Tom GPS. I load the music/movies I am going to use and leave the rest on my computer - I don't see the point in trying to put everything on the phone in case you might want to use all of it during a 20 mintue bus journey

Right now my 16Gb has a approx 6Gb free....it's all down to how you manage the memory

A 16GB iPhone 4 really only has 14GB that you can use - at least that is what mine tells me in General -> About.

Cheers for the help everyone, I ended up going with the 16GB, happy so far! :D
