    hi all

Just looking for expert opinions on what car would be most fuel effecient for me.

At the moment i have an 09 ford fiesta and its very heavy on petrol. i just know i want to change to diesel but dont know where or what to look at.

Really not fussy at this stage about what car, big or small. Plan on keeping this car for few years so if needs be will spend the extra money now.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

well i've about 26k on it at mo so not a lot but am hoping to get promotion in work meaning i'll be doing a lot more driving.

i'm saying in my head 5,000 euro?? but dont really wanna go to that,

What's the engine size? I wouldn't think a normal Ford Fiesta (that's operating correctly) would generally be described as heavy on fuel.

Is that 26000 km per year? Or is that what mileage is up on the car from new?

As Chris says, i would expect the fiesta, no matter what engine is in it, to be quite economical anyway. If you've only covered 26k in the 2+ year you'd have to think long and hard about changing for the sake of a few quid a week.

Prices vary at the pump so this is not a good indicator of fuel efficiency.

no i have been really conscsious of how i'm driving it. im also conscious of fuel prices so would always go for reasonably priced garages, dont just stick to the one!

How many miles do you do a week?

We're not trying to have a go here honestly:)

It's just that we've seen similar posts before, where people think that buying a new car is the best option to save money. And in your case that could mean saving very little money per week.

Spending 5000 + your own cars value, to save ~€10 per week does not makes sense. That's really what people are trying to get at.

Not sure what the price of petrol is where you are. Something is wrong. For 50 euro at 400 km assuming that petrol is 1.45 a litre you are getting 33mpg which is very poor unless one of the following is happening.

    1. You are not measuring the amount of fuel used accurately.

    2. You don not know how to drive properly/heavy foot

    3. You are commuting in heavy traffic

Beat me to it, I was about to say exactly that. :)

Just looking at the figures for an 09 fiesta 1.25l and that actually is about right

    http://www.wisebuyers.co.uk/motoring/car-specifications/Ford/Fiesta+%282008-%29/FO012016/

    Fuel Economy: Urban 34.4
    Fuel Economy: Extra Urban 60.1
    Fuel Economy: Combined 47.1

If your job upgrade would involve some country driving, you could expect your fuel economy to improve considerably so maybe hang on to it.

the ford fiesta diesel econetic may be worth looking at. Your mpg does seem low though, are tyres properly inflated? are you carrying unnecessary wight in car? drive with windows open? Alot of times people will rev underpowered cars alot more than they would adequately powered ones.

    4. There is something wrong with your car

Have you asked your dealer or mechanic about this consumption problem ?

Are you doing mostly motorway driving? If you're doing 125-130km/ph average, a mid 30's MPG is to be expected.

i drive motorway 2 days a week, local 3 days. if i get promotion i'll be motorway 5 days.
have been careful with my foot and im definately not being too heavy on the clutch or brakes.
no weight in car just me. definately dont have windows open in this cold weather!!
brought it back to garage, was just fobbed off.
Maybe need to go back again so!!!
