Should some roads in 2011 be scrapped in favour of more beneficial schemes in 2012?

Looking at some of the road schemes being allocated for funding after budget 2011, should some of these be cancelled in favour of projects that will be more beneficial for a bigger area/region of the country? I'm in favour of the N5 Longford bypass as it will affect a high amount of road users and will steadily improve an N5 national primary route which is one of the worst in the country.

The main scheme I find which could be a enormous waste of taxpayers money is the N22 Tralee bypass. The money saved from building this could be to improve either the N17, N21, N24, N5 or N15 with this years and next years funding from the state. I also find the N4 Downs grade speration project dubious as it's not critically needed but given it's going to cost very little it could proceed. What are your views on this?

Although the NRA is an independent entity, I'd say all schemes will be subject to review once the new government comes in. Tralee was only bumped up the list to appease JHR. (Which is one of the reasons I hope to God that we don't get a government depending on the support of a gaggle of independents - the PIMBY (please in my back yard)ism is the last thing we need.)

Hopefully, schemes will be looked at from a Value For Money perspective - if that was the case, Longford would get the funding in any case. It's only a small amount and it could make a considerable impact.

And Newlands and M11 should immediately be pulled from the failed PPP model and state-funded.

If I was the NRA I wouldn't postpone anything. Just because they save money this year doesn't mean that it will be available next year.

The state has little money. Bundle Newlands with a widening of the N7 and put a toll out by Newbridge.

**** that for a game of soldiers. Another commuter* tax? Put a toll on the M9 and pay for Newlands out of that.

    * I'm not a commuter. I just don't think it'd be fair on those that do.

a toll thought to be fair by one, will be thought unfair by another. Id advocate charging a toll at every motorway slip road, at least this would limit short journeys which are not what the motorways are for (M50 for instance!)

Agree in principle, but operationally a nightmare and would involve building a lot of toll booths.

I don't think anyone could realistically argue a toll on the M9 to be unfair though, as they don't have any mid-route. I'd slap it around Castledermot somewhere. Not just to level the playing field, but to pay for Newlands X without choking that area with a toll, which benefits these road users aswell. Any toll north of Junction 11 would be a nightmare unless it was barrier free

Unfortunately, it looks like tolls will have to be applied to all new motorway sections, plus the M9, to make PPPs more attractive and/or as an alternative to PPPs.

The reluctance of banks to finance this relatively modest project is a very worrying sign and shows just how little faith they have in the state's abilities to pay off debts.

The only way to restore confidence is to separate the debts incurred as a result of the bail-out and guarantees to failed Irish banks from sovereign debt.
