    Female, recently moved to a new city, know noone yet to go for a drink with- would it be totally off kilter to go the local pub on my own with a paper or something? (the aim being to get out of the house& possibly strike up conversation with someone. Am also joining sports clubs, so this wouldn't be the only outlet, am just debating it as a possibility)

    Let things settle down and let things take their course. Be open and let colleagues, housemates and any other friendly faces you know that you're new and want to meet new people and make new friends.

    As for the pub, it's a tricky one. Creepazoids will sense your vulneribility, for want of a better word. Try to keep it as a last resort. I wouldn't expect to much genuine attention over weekends.

    Hi OP

    I went through this several times over the years, this has worked for me in the past;

    but you have to be carfully also, as a rule it is a good idea to keep work and personal stuff seperate - that said I usually fail at this. Some of the best friends, and indeed my best friend I have all met through work.

    If you are in this country it is easy to get out at the weekend and travel to see friends in various locations. Otherwise you need to make a effort to get out and meet prople in a social setting, why not use the web as a means to a end!

    Best of luck

    I am in the same situation as yourself and have been for many years (I am a loner).

    I was advised by a counsellor to go to the pub alone and have a drink and/or take a paper with me to read.

    TBH I found it totally uncomfortable and not a good idea.

    What I would however recommend is to go to a coffee shop and find the seat where you are likely to get the most people sitting around you. Most coffee shops now have a couple of sofas - plonk yourself down in the middle and wait for others to come to you. Bring a crossword mag and just sit there doodling. It's a better alternative than the pub imo.

    I really should take my own advice!:rolleyes:

    Travelling at weekends to see friends, not a problem. Doing that a fair bit, & great craic.
    It's the weeknights,& in particular, Sunday evenings.
    I've gone out to the pub with visitors& housemate- former: mainly interested in chatting amongst ourselves, Latter: in new relationship with guy, so little interest in meeting new people.
    I just worry I'll look like BillyNoMates if I go down on my own. Realistically, I'm can't be going up to try to infiltrate groups of friends, so I suppose it's a matter of seeing if someone else comes up to me to chat?
