What is a printer zone ? and why is it used.
I see printers on different Windows print servers in the company where im training and each printer usually has a unique letter or character at the end of the comment on the server which ive been told is the printer zone. Then the registry of the workstations connecting to the specific printers has to be updated with that zones letter or character when setting up a printer again. But what is the zone used for ? Cant a computer just be mapped with a UNC without the "zone" to be added to the registry?
    Thanks in advance.

    Ask someone from the company.

    Anyone else can only guess.

My guess would be if the company covers a large physical area or is comprised of several individual buildings on the same site, then individual areas would be considered a zone. The nearest physical printer would be one in the same zone. So if you were working in zone D and required a printout you would send it to a printer in zone D.
