    http://www.herald.ie/national-news/callely-bows-out-with-euro158k-payoff-2549213.html
IVOR'S engine has finally run out of steam.
Senator Ivor Callely has quietly bowed out of politics "for the time being" but is set to collect a pay-off of over €150,000, the Herald can reveal.
There had been some speculation that the controversial figure might be set for another comeback after recently engaging in a consultation period with constituents.
But the Herald has learned that the ex-Fianna Fail minister has decided to leave the limelight that he has hogged on several occasions during a chequered career.
He has blamed his decision on what he describes as a "hysterical and vitriolic campaign" against him by the media and others.
Mr Callely, who has spent the last two years embroiled in a variety of expenses scandals, is now set to receive a hefty retirement package.
He is entitled to €132,840 in respect of his career as a TD, €14,763 for his time as a senator, and a termination lump sum -- all tax tree -- upon his departure from politics, totalling to €158,539 in an instant tax-free payoff.
Beyond that he will be able to continue the high life with an annual ministerial pension of €6,637 for the rest of his life, as well as his Dail and Seanad pensions that come to over €55,000 per annum.
In a letter delivered to constituents in recent days, Mr Callely said: "I wish to let you know personally that after consultation with my family, I have made the very difficult decision to step away from public life for the time being.
"I have had an incredibly difficult 12 months fighting to clear my name in the High Court, the Seanad, and most importantly to you.
"I am satisfied that my recent success in the High Court has now cleared me of any such false allegations. Indeed, the High Court judgement is overwhelming robust in my favour."
The High Court awarded the retiring senator €17,000 after finding that a Seanad committee was wrong to ban him from the Oireachtas for 20 days.
The committee imposed the sanction after concluding that Callely wrongly claimed up to €80,000 in travel and subsistence expenses from a Cork holiday home.

Another lovely pension and pay off.

Only a few blood-sucking greedy bastards in the country won't be going bust. The rest of us will be raiding their bins for scraps.

    That pinching thief.

I know a default would be awful and we'd probably die of another famine defaulting, but fcuk it. A default is needed to empty the pockets and the bank accounts of these greedy rats that are leaving the sinking ship. Vote for SINN FEIN

They go to town on him for essentially robbing 80,000 euro yet give him 150,000 plus a 55,000 euro per annum pension so he leaves politics?

That fúcker should be in jail, not being payed to leave politics.

I doubt they had the choice to do otherwise tbh. It just shows what an absolute joke the entire system is.. and the fact that the judicial system found in his favour is even more sickening than the money he's now entitled to.

...I like his style. Almost Tommy Cooperesque...
Labour called to my door today. How are you? Bad, I said. How’re you? The Labour Party said fine. Then you must be the only ones in the entire country, said I. We are all downhearted and dismayed. And angry, angry, angry!!!
I went to the doctors. He said 'I'd like you to lie on the couch'.
    I said 'What for?'
He said 'I'd like to sweep the floor'

There was a thread here recently, that went to about 20 pages, about some petty crook from the west that had a load of convictions, served some time, and still collected around €45k from the state in welfare annually. There was outrage on that thread.

To me these 'white collar' type of crooks are as bad, if not worse, but will never serve any time and will be brushed under the carpet as quietly as possible in this country. Can't see any change happening with the incoming FG government re this. Another example is Drumm; personally I'd rather he was held to account in the US and dealt with there as nothing harsh will happen to him here. Drumm comes to mind as his 'answers' last week in the US about his personal finances were very similar to Bertie's here. Here Bertie walked away, the US won't tolerate that waffle.

Ironic that a Sinn Fein supporter would complain about 'pinching thieves'.

He was a petty crook but his crimes directly impacted people's quality of life much more than Ivor did. Having said that, I hope and trust that Ivor gets what is coming to him, and I don't mean pension benefits.

The bank fraudsters are a whole other story

He would be mad not to take it. Who would say no to €150k? I wouldn't, and I don't think many wouldn't either.

Does this happen in any other eu member states?
whats the story regarding ministers and pensions in the eu? does sarkosy/merkel have any contact info. we are now living of their money. Its only fair that they force our tds to wait until retirement age for their pensions. otherwise ireland will become a black economy and the eu/imf will never see their money.

I dont think so. If you read any international news on whats happening to this country, the commentators are in awe that the Irish people are so passive, whilst getting done over royally.

We're governed by sociopaths. Dont know how these people sleep at night.

Well the eu are going to chase our coperation tax. its only fair that they chase these greedy fcukers who have left the sinking ship. the eu should put a cap on the amount of money that they get in pensions, also to make it available only at irelands retirement age.

Im going to do a little google and find contact info for merkel.

Im going to draft up a letter for emailing. I will probably need help from boards, because my head is fried. There needs to be a cap on these pensions.

Ivors behaviour is dispicable. misclaiming entitlements, compensation, then a fat pension. somebody has to roast his arse.

lol.. I don't think Merkel has any say over the pension rates here, and even if she did, there's no possible way to enforce any changes retroactively.

That'll make your job more interesting if they get in.
