Trek 2.5 - overpriced?

    Hey all,

Fairly new to cycling but looking to move to a half decent road bike.

Did some window shopping on Saturday and ever since I've got my heart set on the Trek 2.5. My head needs some convincing though!

I know for the price (€1799 with 10% discount on BtW) I could get a carbon bike but not that fussed about carbon tbh.

The trek is full integra and my preference would be quality of components over frame so it suits in that regard.

Question is am I paying too much of a premium just because its a Trek?

Other bikes I've looked at are the Cube Agree GTC Pro (carbon I think) and Cube Agree Pro. Components wise how do they shape up against the Trek? A bit confused here as the specs for Cube seem to be a mix of Ultegra and other components whereas I was told the trek is full integra so that leans me back towards the Trek.

Guess I'm hoping someone will say - 'yes go for the Trek' but would appreciate your honest opinions nonetheless!

    Thanks,
    CJ

You may not want carbon, but in talking about prices, you'd expect carbon at that price. All treks, giants, lapierre, specialzied tend to be over priced IMO. components are easier and often cheaper than a frame to upgrade, so its good to have a good base.

for that price have a look at the planet x bikes for a good comparison in price, also canyon and boardman bikes offer excellant value for money, far better than any trek thats for sure.

On the Cube Agree GTC Pro only the rear mech and shifters are Ultegra, other bits (chain, cassette, brakes, front mech) are 105.

I'd still rather have that than the Trek.

treks and giant are over priced in this country(40% hike during the bike to work scheme in 2009)

Trek bikes are overpriced, but I love mine...

Is there a reason why you have your heart set on the 2.5?

Was buying a 2nd bike last year to cover the winter miles and went through some of the same thinking. I ended up going for the 2.1 model. The 105 groupset is a smooth groupset and, strange as it may sound, I prefer it over the Ultegra on my other bike. The only thing I changed on it was the saddle.

I have ended up doing a lot more miles on it than planned(~1,300kms) last year...

Also - what are you upgrading from?

    What about this Planet X?

I think it makes the Trek look pretty overpriced. Maybe not in red though....

I would go for the PX myself. I have owned alu and carbon Treks; they are great bikes but yes, over priced. The PX is better for the money.

Isn't this just disgusting? I am truly sick of the greed, and will never buy those bikes from these shops again. Greed is NOT good.

Thanks for all the advice lads.

I'll definitely have to check out the Planet X bikes.

Am only upgrading from a flat-barred racer (Giant FCR 2) so will a biggish step up for me. Having said that the Giant served me well for the past couple of years so no complaints there (Has about 6k km on the clock) and I still intend to keep it as a training bike.

I have a trek 2.1 too, fantastic bike but I wouldn't have paid Irish prices for it, bought mine in the U.S.
