I hope their efficiency has improved vastly!! We stayed in a holiday cottage for 5 days and it had an old stanley oil fired cooker with boiler heating a tiny hot water cylinder and 4 radiators.

It was just after the January severe cold spell. We also lit a coal fire in the livingroom as the place was quite cold after being empty.
The very nice owner came around on the last evening and seemed quite surprised/shocked we had used 48euros worth of oil and 4euros of electric.

We could believe the usage was correct as we had oil central heating in our house years ago and at times in the really cold weather we had used 60 euros a week. This was for heating a reasonably insulated stone house of 120sqm.It had 14 radiators. The boiler was 12 months old and was not a condensing boiler.
In our house now we have a solid fuel stove with backboiler and have no oil/gas etc. The stove heats the house superbly on its own.
I would fit a condensing oil boiler only and have it linked to a solid fuel stove with backboiler. Best of both worlds.

    Stove Fan:)
