To ensure you don't help someone get elected are you better to only vote for your top 4 or vote the entire ballot babel in reverse order? I would think the not voting is better.

If you do NOT want someone to get your transfer. Do not give them a number. Simple as that. If you only mark your Top 4, then if your paper is in the surplus or eliminated transfer of ballots for your 5th, it will just be eliminated.

Your vote will not have been counted towards getting anyone elected. That is the only drawback. But in truth, if it got to that stage your Top 4 have either been elected or eliminated anyway.

I would advise you to at the least include your Top [Seats in your constituency plus 1]. So in North Dublin, there are 4 seats so cover at least your Top 5. Usually it will only get to Top 4, but if it is close, a 5th and rarity 6th will be used.

If there's someone who you really really want to NOT get elected, then the best way to help that happen is to vote the whole way down the card and give that person the last vote.

If you only vote the top 4 or 5, the last seat could end up being between someone you don't really like (person A) and someone you despise (person B). If you had voted the whole way down, you could have helped prevent person B from being elected by giving a higher preference to person A. Whereas if you'd given neither of them any preferences, then your vote could not impact on that final seat.

I don't think they are conflicting. If, after your first 4 preferences are given out, you dislike the remaining candidates equally, then you should stop at 4.

However, even with those remaining (say) 6 candidates, there'll be some you like less than others. So my advice is to enter the person you least like at 10 (or whatever the final number is) and then work you're way back up until you have your card completed.

I mentioned this on another post, but its very important to remember that by giving someone a number 5 (for example) preference, that transfer can NEVER be used to help them beat your number 1-4 choice. It can only be used to help them beat somebody who is lower down in your preference.
