    Hello,

Got the cycling bug some time back and had completed a number of events last year. Kept the training up over the winter and am interested in taking part in the West Coast Wheelers open race in Loughrea next Sunday.

I am doing the race just for the experience and buzz, I will be in the A4 category and am wondering what would be the typical pace for this type of race. Just enough to keep in the bunch (towards the back of the bunch probably!!)

    Regards

The website isn't entirely clear, but it looks like there will be a combined A3/4 race with handicap.

This means the pace is likely to be easy until the A3s catch (because no-one will want to tire themselves out) and then either hard (as you fight to hang on) or very easy (as you cruise in after being dropped).

Try and stay up in the bunch.

I was talking with the organiser of this race and it is not going to be handicapped so the A3's and A4's will start together. I'm also from the area and know the course. The group will stay together early on. There is a KOH prize about 20km into the race. It's about a mile of a hill so people will race it for KOH and a few stronger A3's will probably get away. The group will reform but its rolling and twisty so a break will have a good chance of staying away given the roads. As for average pace I don't know but I know there will be at least 7 or 8 from our club all racing for the first time so you'll have company no matter what your level. Enjoy and see you there on the day.
