Hello all, I'm thinking of joining the IPF and I'd like to ask existing members if they think it's worthwhile? The Distinctions programme sounds interesting.

    Thanks,
    Noel.

If I'm not mistaken you join the IPF through your local camera club. Not sure if it's open to individual membership.

If you fancy letters after your name then you can do the distinctions - L, A and F. The distinctions judging is really interesting to go watch even if you aren't submitting a panel yourself.

I think you can join IPF directly but most join as part of membership to an affiliated club.

Going for a distiction is a good challenge. There is a standard with which a panel has to comply. This does not suit everyone but it does some.

Thanks guys. Is the distinctions programme the main advantage of joining? I'm a member of the Athy photo club btw.

I see you're looking to make a profession out of your camera - having letters after your name may help you from a commercial point of view.
People like buying from other people with letters after their name - seems to give them some sort of reassurance that they are dealing with a qualified practitioner.
The "L" is easy enough to get (must be 'cos I have it), the "A" is a bit more challenging and the "F" I'd say is fairly tough. None of the letters make you a "good" photographer but they do demonstrate that you have reached some level of competency.
So in short from your point of view it's worth chasing. BTW, you are already an IPF member assuming your club is affiliated.
