Starting New Threads in the GE2011 Forum...A Request:

    Dear Admin,

With all these "A Vote for Bla Bla is a Vote for Murder/Rape/Incest" type threads currently spamming the board from mostly first time posters, can I propose that threads may only be started by posters with 100 posts or more for the remainder of the campaign?

They do this on Politics.ie and saves a lot of trolling and agro.

    Thanks,

    Telekon.

Should have just PM'd one of the mods on this.

tbf to the newbies they have as much right to post here as anyone else. if you don't like it don't read it. if it breaks the rules the mods will sort it out.

As I alluded to elsewhere, its the lack of imagination in the thread titles that is the most annoying thing. Do you not agree with the way politics.ie does it?

I reckon posters should earn the right to post new threads.

I agree with you 100%, I have added it to the topic I started in feedback yesterday about the mods being absent for a portion of the day.

I expect this to get worse over the next couple of days with these kind of pathetic negative campaigning threads becoming more prevalent as certain organisations get more desperate.

I am adding this request each time I report these posts and have asked if these organisations can be identified by boards that they be unmasked for attempting to influence the discussions on boards in an underhanded manner. That could be useful for those of us who haven't made their minds up on who to vote for.

Oh no I agree... but where do you draw the line? Either everyone has the right to start threads or no one does...

And then if you do restrict the ability to debate the election/start threads to people with over 100 posts... thats dodgy territory.

Don't get me wrong I believe if people have a vested interest they should be exposed as such. But if your a Newb then you may not have any idea about how boards works and what sort of language should be used.

100 posts is just an indicator, that would be for others to decide obviously.

But vested interests, to start a new thread would have to get involved with the debates on here first before forcing their agenda straight away with a new thread.

The good thing about Boards.ie is the mod's ability in weeding out those that try to artificially boost their post count so that would also force new posters to add to the current discussions in a proactive manner.

I partially disagree with this suggestion, I only joined in November and haven't had the opportunity yet to contribute that many posts.

My suggestion would be to restrict starting new threads to people who have been members for a certain amount of time or have posted say 50 times.

Just realised that this is my 50th - yippee!!

    Lol! :)

Thats fair enough. 100 was what they do on politics.ie and only a suggestion.

Time when joined should also be a factor. Its all very tricky to figure out to be fair...

    Yes.

Is it really? How come it only became an issue with the thread I started on the reintroduction of third-level fees, as per FG's election manifesto?

That's arbitrary. Why should first time posters (those with less than 100 posts, no less) automatically be deemed spammers, or whatever, in this GE forum?

You started the latest of a long list of these type threads so I am not singling you out.

I made this exact same point in the "A Vote for Labour is a Vote for the Trade Unions" thread yesterday (see my post made at 19.15) and that was a thread attacking the Labour Party!

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056186305

Don't be so quick to attack me without checking your facts!!

    Accepted.

However I still disagree with your proposal. And the contentions "a vote for x is a vote for x" are not necessarily incorrect.

Maybe it would be better to debate the topic rather than seek a blanket ban on new posters.

Whoa, whoa, whoa!!! When did I ever suggest that??

I am purely referring to starting new threads. Obviously new posters can use the boards all they want. I've been saying that all along...

A blanket ban on starting new threads, yes; and new threads are an important way to bring issues to light.

New threads with an agenda by party activists it seems...will we still see you post here in 3 months time?? I doubt it...

These are also highly negative threads that may give rise to trolling, agro, infractions and bans due to the manner and tone in which they are set out by the OP.

Its how Karl Rove would conduct his affairs on Boards.ie, I would imagine...

That's just an assumption on your part. And are we to assume that none of the high post count posters are party activists?

    Not at all!

But you can't deny that it is an educated assumption, considering we are 4 days from polling day, that newly joined posterd have particular agendas they want to get across specifically in relation to THIS election and are mostly mounting what is purely a negative campaign against particular parties.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,745 ✭✭✭Eliot Rosewater

Realistically speaking, this probably won't be done in the 4 days between now and the election. Which is a pity, I think, because there's merit to the idea. (though I wouldn't set it at 100 myself).

The admins are aware/will be made aware of this thread.

I am locking it now. There is not more to be said here, and there's fighting starting.

I have made a new sticky to address some of the concerns here. Kindly read it: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056187010. Please report all posts you find suspicious. It's going to be busy: we'll need your help. :)

    Regards,
    Eliot.
