Ok, so for total noobs like me, a thread lik this could be handy.

Like, say, I have a question or I am in two minds about doing something and would like a second opinion, the more experienced players could impart their wisdom.

I'll get the ball rolling, I am currently making a **** ton of stone from cobblestone and coal for my house, was wondering, is it worth the effort?
It takes a long time, but I much prefer the look of the stone over the cobblestone, but is there any other benefits in one over the others?

Totally agree on avoiding cobblestone, it looks horrendous, I never use it at all. Sandstone was a very welcome addition to the game.

i kind of love cobblestone, but i use it alot mixed in with stone. wood, planks mixed it.

it suits me, but only becouse i do alot of medievel constructions.

as for interesting ways of using cobble stone, you can do a whole biulding in cobble stone, then add a few random patches of normal stone, it will look like it is a bit rustic and eged.

you can see a few examples in my village. tallons server.

Right, so I have noticed in my current game world that the larger coal deposits tend to be either beside or behind deposits of gravel.
I dunno if this is just my world or true of the game but I am finding some massive deposits of coal and I'm using large cliff face deposits of gravel as my indicator for where to dig. They aren't always there but when I do find them, it's a lot of coal, like upwards of 20 blocks of coal.

Has anyone noticed anything similar or is it just my world?

Also, anyone have any good pointers for finding ore (all types) and diamonds?

Merging these threads, as its probably advice on this.

Coal is found at any level but normally from +/- 20 layers from sea level. The iron ore is really interesting though. There's been numerous claims that it never appears above ground but people have reported it!

Diamond/lazlupin/gold/clay are usually found within the last 20 layers of the map (most prominent anyway). If you find a low level cave, gold/diamond are always very close by (2-5) blocks outwards from the caves

Alot of iron ore around my area where I'mbuilding on Talls server, gobbled most of it up but a little excavation downward would reap alot of iron ore.
