    Hi guys,
I had a guy from a company who had to hang 2 double doors in kitchen, between sitting room/kitchen. He rebated the doors, but rebate was too wide, so now the doors dont meet correctly in the middle, dont close in-line with each other, and you can catch your hand of the rebated lock on the other door when you close it.
Where the rebated lock was fitted he chisseled away the frame exposing all the inside of the catch part of the lock,so there is nowhere for the lock to be screwed in also he could not rebate the hinges because it would mean the doors would not meet at all.
Basically he made a balls of the job.

I rang him to try get him to come and have a look,to see if we can do anything or to get money back for destroying doors and for what i paid him to hang them but he said the door was warped, and he thought he did a great job, and he had never seen that type of a lock before, and he can't see how there is anything he can do to fix them.
He is meant to call this week some evening.
In case he doesnt call or doesnt want to give refund i want to know my rights etc..

    Any ideas??

    Thanks

    just added pics

That lock isn't meant to be used with rebated doors by the looks of it. He can make the rebate deeper to make the doors sit flush but i reckon you need a new lock, it isn't suitable. Don't know about your legal rights though, if you paid "cash", ie. no receipt, then you're screwed.

    What a fruggin mess:eek:

Wrong Lock and looks like it was all done with a blunt spoon. Jeez that fella couldn't spell carpenter "doors warped & never seen that type of lock before". Why the hell did he continue to botch it then?

That my friend is a disgrace If this was a company get your money back put those two doors on a skip and get some one who knows what they are doing.

    Thanks for the reply
i know..what a mess..im not a carpenter,so how do you mean the lock is not suitable? When we ordered the doors the lad in hardware place said these locks would suit doors and also on the packaging of the lock it said rebated locks.

Hiya this is an example of a rebated mortice lock suitable for what you needed.

There is no way on earth that guy knew what he was doing. Way too much of this stuff still going on. I just re-read your post to confirm he was from a company and see he couldn't even rebate the bleedin hinges. OMG

Sorry you are at the receiving end of this and hope you can get a full refund. Get onto consumer rights and fight your case, good luck.

the guy on way out tonight..was on phone for 15 minutes with him, argueing and he refusing to come out.He said he did the best he could with the materials he was given, and then he said the frame was the wrong size..and there was no point in him coming out as there was nothing he could do to fix them.. he offered to refund the money it cost to hang doors but refused to pay for the doors..
should be nteresting to see what happens tonight...

That is the correct lock, the striker plate is fitted backwards! the flat face should be toward the door.. The Mortice part of the lock is fitted too deep in the rebate. Did he use an axe or what!! Its not the worst ive ever seen but it IS the first time ive seen one fitted backwards!!! If the doors are good quality (solid type) you may be able to ripp the whole rebate the fool cut and glue and pin a new slip on the edge and start again. When its painted and if its done well you would never know. But if the doors are made up with only solid edges then you would be better off cuttin your losses.. rebate_1.jpg
