what to do if you can't afford certain software instruments?

I know most are available online on one site or another but what about the likes of NI komplete etc.

I'm unemployed at the minute and have devoted a lot of time to producing lately and have been trying my hand at subtractive synthesis so I can have all my own sounds. after sorting a pretty decent kick, snare and high hat I turn to a cymbal only to find out about sample synthesis.

this leads me to the software above but won't be in a position to buy for a while.

Whilst not trying to discourage you from making your own sounds you could just use samples for those sounds you cant synthesize yourself and the use freeware synths for all your leads/bass/pads etc.

Theres no shame in using one shot samples

true but sample synthesis seems to be the way forward really. I really don't want to use any untouched samples as the timbre etc will be someone elses design and then ya might not have permission to use the sample in the first place.

Not sure if you mean its the way forward for you or do you mean its the future of music production

Not quite sure your aware how one shot samples work
Noone is going to sue you for using a kick, snare, hat sample as its virtually impossible to define individual hits, plus your going to be eq'ing it.
Also the timbre thing has never really hampered me.

theres plenty of sample packs out there, all legal for you to use too
Were not talking about using loops, its simply a short sample.

As for the synths head to kvr and grab what freebie synths you find appealing

Suppose because someone put in hours of hard work and effort to make it. I used to download music / samples etc illegally but gave it all up. Its pointless. It would be like someone stealing from a shop or asking you to work for free because they don't feel like paying you.

The serials and authentication are pretty secure. Also you need to find someone willing to rip and upload the software.

Don't know if you're the programming type OP, but why not try some of the open-source software for programming soud synthesis? I'd personally recommend Pure Data as it has a GUI interface, but there's also c-sound and supercollider if you prefer working with traditional code.

I should point out that pure data is very powerful and reasonably easy to understand if you already know anything about sound synthesis. It may look daunting but if you're interested I can post links to a few tutorials that will get you producing complex sounds very quickly. :)

Here's the link: http://puredata.info/ It runs on any OS.

It's worth giving it some time - when you become adept with it there's not much you can't do, the only limits being your imagination and your soundcard ;)If you want any advice/tutorial links etc just PM me!
