Rent Allowance - What do I Need To Know??

I'm currently renting a room for the academic year, and plan to rent a small house or apartment for the summer and future years in college. I'm on Back To Education Allowance after being on the dole for just over a year. I was told that once I have been living out of home for 6 months, I would be entitled to apply for rent allowance. I'm relying on this to be fact as there is no room for me in the family home, and my lease is up here at the end of May.

So, does anyone know if I am entitled to rent allowance, and how I go about applying? I know I need to be on a housing list with the council, but someone told me I need to be living in the area for a year to get on that list. Would it be possible to go on the housing list in my home town, but apply for rent allowance where I am living now?

Any information would be greatly appreciated, especially if someone knows the system in Dundalk, Louth.

Go and see your Community Welfare Officer as soon as possible. RA can be complicated. Yes yoi do have to be on the housing list where you will rent. RA and housing list places are not interchangeable. If you move area you hav to go through the whole application process again including housing list placing.

Your CWO is the only one who can really advise; he/she will have clinics each week.
