Maybe someone can help me with this one. My laptop has Vista home premium on it. Is it possible to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional?.

I think that the terms are that you have to be either a student or have kids which are students/attending school or be a teacher/involved in education.

Yes, that would be fine. Any version of XP/vista will do AFAIK.

You can do a clean install with these upgrade versions. It's actually quite easy.

    Check out: http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows-7/clean-install-windows-7-with-upgrade-media.aspx

Installing twice (option 3) worked for me when I installed.

Read the small print for each package. Adobe for instance say that there are no serial number supplied and you will need to send confirmation of student details to validate, and if you don not then no refund will be made. That's how I read it anyway

Microsoft also provide some of there other software free for students:

    Microsoft Dreamspark

Mostly acedemic/developer/designer tools so not much use for the average home user, but worth menioning anyway.

Not entirely true. You cannot 'upgrade' 32bit windows to 64bit Windows 7. (this counts for ANY XP /Vista / Win 7)

Also, you cannot 'upgrade' from XP - it requires a 'clean' install. Even though they don't make it easy, and you're entitled to.

I was really referring to the legal requirements rather than migrating to a new OS, but I should have been clearer. I've read that with Win 7, you can do a clean install from boot with the upgrade edition as long as it detects an old installation of windows (i.e., you don't necessarily have to launch from inside windows like vista upgrades).

You can do it without having another version there at all ;)

A link posted above outlines 3 methods. MS actually support doing a clean install from the upgrade disk, as they understand people need to format / upgrade from different versions so they allow it. However, they don't make it straight forward.
