I didnt notice til I was hovering there is a fair bit of water at the drivers foot well :-(

Also the windows steam up on the inside, that explains why thats happening.

    Where to start looking.

Ive heard it can be a bitch to find the problem.

Open your bonnet. Take off cover where battery is housed. Should be a long black weatherstrap. Look under battery and reservoir and see if there is any standing water. If so,take battery out and its housing. There should be a screw or a bung to open to allow water out. Good luck.

Seems to be a common vag problem caused by leaves and crap blocking the drainage holes under the bonnet.

Could also be the windscreen, sounds strange but had it with 2 cars.

It's a common vag problem. Check drainage outlets under wheel arches for a blockage. Then check for leaves under bonnet. Also sometimes the drainage tubes disconnect from drainage outlets in wheel arches.

Mate said to check the pollen filter to see if its wet = not sealed properly.

Im looking through the user manual and see no ref to pollen filter.

    Anyone know where it is?

Number of above posts could set you on the right track.

I test-drove a Passat couple of years ago and discovered a pool of water sloshing around on the floor in the back.

The seller tried to tell me it was some minor problem, but I did a bit of searching and found it was a design problem with the pollen filter seal.

Same kind of thing seems to apply to the Audi A4, but in this case it may well be the drainage hole under the battery.

    Hi Worded,

My Passat is in the garage at the moment drying out for the same problem.
Cause with mine is a blocked drain from the pollen filter as a few lads have pointed out below.

    Best of luck

Just tackled this somewhat on the S8. In my case the 3 drains in the engine bay and the 2 internal AC condensate drains were all ok. Yes, 5 potiential sources of the problem.

What I suspect was my issue was the Sunroof drains, all 4 of them, were blocked. You can only reach the front 2 drains with the roof open, so I blasted them out with compressed air. Oddly there was no obvious physical blockage, maybe the rubber tubing kinks itself?

Have you checked it is just water and not coolant? ie a leaky heater matrix....

I had same problem in an a8. Watch out your air clearance of sunroof drains didn't 'pop' the drainage tubes in the boot where the cd player is. You'll get a wet boot and maybe lose some gadgets

Good tip! I couldnt get to the Rear air drains however at all (from the sunroof).

I pulled some of the boot liner away to have a look at the tubing, gave it a bit of a pinch and all seems ok, though maybe blocked internally. Just need to find where they exist to blast them in reverse.. Dismantling the full liner in the boot to actually get in at them sounds like a chore.

Sorry to be dragging up an old thread but is there any chance someone could describe the 5 potential sources of this problem in detail i.e where and how to check for them as I am experiencing the same problem with water gathering in the driver side rear foot well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

My problem was that the ECU cover was cracked in a corner + not sealed correctly as a result. A lazy mechanic had broken it at some stage in the cars life.

There are 4 or 5 screws holding the ECU in place. The last one is very difficulty to remove. You have to remove lots of pieces to get a screw driver to it. A lazy fcuk yanked it off. This allowed water to get in on the corner.

Was very lucky to find this! I looked for a you tube video on how to remove a pollen filter. The video was from a LHD and I didnt know this. I opened the ECU which is where the pollen filter was on the vid. Pot luck it was.
I was so so happy to find the cause
