FAS.ie Jobs

Just wondering if anybody here has had experiences of applying for jobs listed on the FAS website?

It's probably the site I have used most often recently but I'm not sure I will anymore after a few bad experiences.

Firstly I was interviewed for a 'Tourist Advisor' position in the South East as part of the community employment programme. This was a job I was really interested in and would have liked to do, having had previous experience in that area. A couple of weeks after the interview, which went really well, I rang them to see what the story was as I did not hear any call back. I was told that I got the job but that I would not be allowed to take the position as I was not unemployed for long enough.

Then most recenly I applied for a position as a part-time traffic warden in Wicklow, thing Parkrite was the name of the crowd with the job. A guy rang me to ask was I definately interested and said I could expect a call for an interview. A week later I heard nothing so I rang them back. The lady who answered said whoever rang me was off sick and that, as far as she knew, interviews had already taken place. In the present climate even to be offered an interview is an achievement so natually I was very dissapointed.

What I want to know is how/why are these jobs placed on the FAS website? If I complain to FAS about the previous two circumstances will it make any difference, or is this the kind of thing one typically encounters on a regular basis when job hunting and I'm just making a meal out of it??

What you're experiencing is typical unfortunately. Just stay positive and keep applying for jobs and it'll eventually work out for you.

I applied for a job off the fas website and got a reply a couple of hours later saying they had 41 replies already that morning and had filled the position.

It's just the way things are at the moment. It's hard. Just have to keep on trying.

FAS screwed up in letting you be interviewed for the first job: it was a waste of everyone's time even putting you forward, and normally they do screen better.

Apart from that, you've summed it up well: "this [is] the kind of thing one typically encounters on a regular basis when job hunting and [you are] making a meal out of it"

Sorry. And good luck with the search.

Its a very common occurence I'm afraid. I have been a bit unlucky with FAS to say the least though. I have been contacted by prospective employers for unpaid work but didn't progress. Applied for jobs on it but never been succesful in attaining an interview with fas was due to a high number of applications, often enough having choosen their candiate for the position in advance sometimes or that I didn't meet all their requirements etc. I think experience is another thing, the more experience you have in a certain field the more likely you will get something through FAS. Its the same story with any job/recruitment agency/employer/company etc.

Its a silly reason though to say that you weren't unemployed long enough? its hard to get the balance right if thats the case when employers are so fussy. Maybe with FAS they want to give people who have been unemployed for longer a chance. Its their own fault for having asked you firs the first interivew a waste of time like another poster said. If they didn't really want you for the job, why should they have bothered.
They should be more decent about it when it comes to interviews at least.

You just have to keep on trying, its a bit like the lotto! Good luck with your job hunting OP.

I have had interviews and got jobs with companies advertising on the site over the years. They have been the most unprofessional companies I have come across.

I'd agree with the above statement.

I'd also add that in my experience companies who advertise on the FAS website are usually small companies who usually are only willing to pay the bare minimum regardless of experience or expertise.

    Sites like Irishjobs.ie, jobs.ie, monster.ie, loadzajobs.ie, recruitireland.com, etc are much better.

I applied for a job through the Fas website. A week later I was called to interview, as it was the first interview I didnt talk about wages. About two days after the interview I got a phone call telling me that the company wanted me to work for them. I was delighted up untill they asked me if I qualified for WWP as the job didnt offer a wage. I felt sick and told them if they wanted free workers they should have mentioned that before they called me to interview. I havent used the Fas website since then.

No wage  Just the kind of job we all need.
I know the idea of these things is to get people experience to make it easier to get another job, or the hope that the employer will take you on full time and pay you. But I doubt its very effective. Most companies can just get some free labour for a while. They wont spend much time training you as your not gonna be around long. Why keep you on, when they can let you go, then a few weeks later contact FAS and ask for another free worker. As for experience, doubt that telling an employer at an interview that you did some free work for a couple of months as you couldn't get a proper job is gonna count for a great deal.
Or maybe i'm just a skeptic
I've applied for jobs advertised by FAS, although I always contact the employer directly, i'm not registered with FAS, does this go against me? Do employers have to take people who are registered with FAS? I've never heard anything back from any of them, even when i've had more than enough qualifications and experience.

It is terrible that they advertised it as a job rather than a WPP. Name and shame I say!

I seriously don't think people registered with FAS get jobs over people not registered. Why would they! I think you have to register with FAS if you are on the dole etc but I could be wrong.

Cheers, was wondering if maybe they get some sort of subsidy or similar for employing unemployed people through FAS.
Or maybe have to just take applicants who are registered with them. All jobs i've applied for, the advert has said to send cv direct to employer, so doubt this is the case.

In fairness to Fas, they have about 4,000 jobs on their site. I accept some of them will be WPP or from scumbag employers, but I'm sure most of the jobs are valid and fine.
