It would be cheaper to check the spark plugs are ok, and getting the coil pack tested. An OBDII scanner won't tell all details about the car.

id wager €100 its the coilpack! Ford Focus's have a known problem with them.

if your hell bent on getting a reader have a look here too

2002 Focus 1.6 petrol, engine light on, sounds like it's only running on three cylinders.

My question is does anyone have experience with the bluetooth ELM OBD-II adapters, paired with Android software? Am I wasting my time?

    Cheers.
I have used bluetooth ELM with PC based software and its fine. I can't comment on what android will be like, but your android device will need a good battery in it as power consumption goes up significantly when using bluetooth.

Read all of this thread.(water on head) That could be the problem or else its just the coil. However the coils don't really give trouble on your Focus.

When you have a chance just pop the bonnet and lift out one of the HT leads going onto the spark plugs. No DIY skill involved just a bit of a wiggle and pull up. You can then see if there is water down there. Maybe try HT lead one first then try number three lead.
They are four leads in total.
If you find water thats your problem, if not its probably just the coil.

In terms of software from the andriod side of things, what you want is Torque, it's free with ads or like $1.20 with out, I highly recommend it gives a hell of a lot of information back.
