How much should life should you get from brake pads on a 04 1.6 avensis with a normal driving style, there is about 40k on the front and roughly 32k on the rear.

Im not trying to be smart OP, but how long is a piece of string. Your Normal driving could be conservative or aggressive to somone else.

Sounds like you got a good bit out of them being honest. The avensis is a heavy enough car. Could be alot of town driving versus motorway driving which would use more in town driving.

As above, there are too many variables in play to say how long pads would last.

Their thickness should have been measured at every service and this would be giving a picture of how quickly they are wearing on your car and allow remaining life to be estimated.

I am not being smart either but whats the story with 40k on the front and 32k on the rear. I presume its mileage but how is it different or have I consumed too much porter..

Changed at different times. E.g. Brakes changed on the front at 60k but back had life left. Back changed at 68k and the car has now driven 100k.

Either that or I misunderstood what you're asking.

Braking effort is larger in the front in an Avensis so you would have imagined it would have been the opposite.. Im not sure but it could be something in the order of 70% front and 30% back. Wiser men than me would tell you the exact amount.

It's not just the Avensis. Most road cars have a brake bias towards the front. If the had equal balance it would cause over-steer which you average driver hates. And it is somewhere in the region of 3:1(front:back)

That is quite likely. Its also possible that rear pads are thinner than the fronts when new so might wear out at around the same time or sooner.

Its possible to get a lot of miles from brake pads so the answer to the OP's question is "it depends". For instance on my current car I got 160k miles from the original front pads and 120k miles from the original rears. Not sure why the rears wore out sooner.

I get under 25k miles from front pads. Rears go for multiples of this.
My parents never change brakes over 3 years ownership & 60k miles so its all down to driving.
