I'm going looking at a few motors next week and one I'm looking at is an english import with 90k, a friend looked at it for me today and says it's as clean as a whistle but the service history is not there and I need a few pointers on what to look for.

    Thanks in advance........

Do a hpi check with the original UK registration to see what turns up.

    what make/model car is it?

VAG cars have some info stored on the computer so could accessed there if you know someone with VCD

Definitely do an online check - one is www.motorcheck.ie

Old-style visual checks: look at pedals, driver seat, steering wheel, switchgear, gear lever to see if their condition tallies with the displayed mileage. Beware of new rubber on the pedals.

Totally, I stupidly nearly bought a UK import with 60k on the clock. HPI'd it and it had 96k at last UK service.

My wife's car was a UK import also, but that one had full history, HPI and finance checks before I put a penny down on it.

It's extraordinarily rare to come across a genuine UK car with no service history. Almost unheard of over there.
