00 Golf 1.6L petrol - clutch problem I presume

I was driving along at about 10mph in first when suddenly the power went. Car slowed to a stop. Engine continued running and was revvable but no traction whatsoever.
Pushed it off the road. It starts ok but nothing happens when I put it in gear - no movement (revs needle wobbles a bit).

Not sure if it's related but about 3 months ago the clutch pedal got "stuck" down. I had to reef it up just to get the car in / out of gear.
Problem seemed to sort itself out. I took it to a mechanic at the time who said they are a hydraulic clutch and he'd never heard of a problem with them until a punter came in with exactly the same sticking pedal issue 2 months previously. He'd unstuck the pedal and had no more problems so the mechanic reckoned leave it alone.

    Any opinions appreciated.
    P
