Hey lads, This hazing/stain is on both of my headlights. Can anyone suggest a product to get rid of it? It's on the outside of the plastic and elbow grease isn't shifting it!

    Pics attached.

    Thanks

    You mean Meguiars? :D

I used "brasso" on mine, generally fine abrasive polishes are good on oxidised plastic headlamp covers but test on a small patch first

Thanks lads, heard about that Maguiars stuff before, wasn't sure it would work for oxidised plastic, must look it up. Will see if I have any brasso lying around and try it on the corner.
    Thanks lads!

Search for headlight restoration on detailing world,
    http://www.detailingworld.co.uk

Loads of threads on it there, though the majority seem to use machines for the sanding/polishing.

Looks like the lacquers gone off these lights though, how does the Meguiers stuff work?

Meguiars say it will get rid of any oxidation. Anyone here buy this stuff before? Can only seem to find it from America (no European stores sell it?) Found it on EBAY should come to about 25 quid so thats alright, gonna give it a go!

You need to sand away that lacquer first.

    .

Yupp, it's a gen 3 and wanted to get rid of the amber in the lights. Had it painted black, looks miles better but the oxidation really stands out now as opposed to showing against chrome.

Colm, Do ya think that Meguiars stuff won't work without a bit of sanding first? Was afraid to try that in case I wreck the plastic altogether, can't afford new headlights.

How hard was the de-ambering? I'm tempted but the idea of putting my headlights in the oven as suggested on other sites doesn't really appeal to me.

Ya that sounded right dodgy! My gf's dad did it, he's a panel beater and had the right tools for it. He used a heat gun to seperate the light and again to reseal the glue. It was tricky but after the 1st one was done, he flew through the second. Took about 2 hours over all.

He used the same spray paint on the side repeaters as well. Huge improvement. Got the chrome 'flashing amber' bulbs off ebay for 5 euro. If you are ever around the Limerick area, I can ask him if he's looking do it again.

    Hi all,

I used the 3M Headlight Kit and actually did more damage than good on both my headlights, instead of slight oxidisation i now have noticably cloudy headlights over my xenons. I'm going to cut my losses and get a professional to do the job.

Does anybody know of any places near South Dublin that do headlight restoration or that come out to you?

    Thanks

Are those the lads that sprayed your FTO a while back Goz?

Can't see those prices being beaten in Dublin.

They are indeed. I picked up my E200 from them a few hours ago. Was quoted €150 to repair and respray a busted back bumper and replace a supplied impact bar. I was only charged €130 in the end, which included a mini valet, because I picked up a headlight and grill (for another car being repaired) for the owner, while I was at the scrap yard. Looks great.

Will the pros re-lacquer them? My dad's old merc needs this doing.

Some will, some won't. I have restored a couple of sets myself and got really good results. I used lacquer after wet sanding the headlamps. I suppose you have to ask, but who cares as long as the job is done and it lasts a few years?
