Matthew Hatton is getting a shot against Alvarez.

Cant see anything but a beating for Hatton. Alvarez is real young and is getting hyped by HBO as the new De La Hoya but he does look legit. The guy is accurate with heavy hands.

Also that the big head of red hair, there has to be Irish in him somewhere ...

its also for the vacant WBC or WBA, not sure which title, but one of the non mickey mouse ones

i reckon Alvarez will spark Hatton within 8 rounds, but it'll be a cracking scrap thats for sure

WBC = We be Crooked :(

Hatton is an average Welterweight, yet he gets a shot against their Golden boy for the 154 belt. Alvarez obviously wins, but he'll be a paper champion

Yep, making this fight a title fight is an absolute joke. Oscar has a word with the WBC and hey presto, title is on the line. Alvarez is a good fighter, but does he deserve this? Don't think so. And Matthew Hatton certainly doesn't. Decisions like this do more harm than good to Boxing.

Yeah this Mexican Alvarez is being pushed and Hatton is stepping up in weight. Its crazy that he's had 36 fights and is 20 years old

On another note I hate the way I keep hearing that Golden Boy have the next Oscar De La Hoya. Last November the next Oscar De La Hoya was Victor Ortiz and he drew with Peterson on the Maidana Khan undercard.

I know this is the title vacated by the 144 lbs Manny Pacquaio who won it at a catchweight, but at least he had to fight a legit opponent for it. Alvarez is being handed this title on a silver platter

But this is the same body who ranks Erik Morales as the #1 Junior Welterweight and Kelly Pavlik as the #1 Super Middleweight, so we shouldn't be surprised :pac:

Has Hatton ever even fought a light middle? What a joke of a fight.

This isn't going to end well for Hatton.

No it didn't. All three judges scored the bout 119-108.

Thought Alvarez tried too hard to be the archetypal Mexican fighter by trying to blast his way right through Hatton from the first bell. In the later rounds when he tried to pick his shots, he dissected Hatton. But by that time he was too tired to land the KO punch.

Will be interesting to see his progress now that he has a belt.

I came out of the fight more impressed with Hatton than Alvarez. Firstly Alvarez was much bigger in size and strength... and still came over the limit which is a bit of dick move considering they contractually agreed a specific weight and should stick to it. The little bit of money he lost won't matter seeing as he know has the title.

Hatton was tough enough he took a lot of abuse and kept throwing back, if it weren't for the fact he was so feather fisted he could have troubled Alvarez.

I'm left with more questions than answers regarding Alvarez to be honest...

Alvarez has been well matched up till now, i know he's still only 20 but if they're giving him an easy World title then they have to puty the elite fighters in there with him, he'll struggle against them. He's easy enough to hit and i remember Cottos brother wobbled him badly a few fights ago but in fairness he showed great heart to come back. Has Alvarez actually faced a proper light-middle yet?
I think he has plenty of skill and it's great watching him but there's huge questionmarks over him but he's still only a pup and he's at an excellent level for his age.

Oh yeah without doubt, he's doing very well for a fella so young... it's just I wouldn't take any notice of the fights he's had previously... he hasn't really fought anyone of worth, having this title will have top fighters gunning for him now, Cotto will surely fancy his chances of getting another title

Goes to show how bad pro boxing is getting when Matthew Hatton, the worlds most bland and uninspiring fighter is getting a world title shot.

Alvarez can proudly state that he won the WBC light middle championship by beating the 3rd best welter in Manchester.

Desperate. And I am being serious here, but I doubt Hatton would have won a LW belt against any real world champ, even when weighing 150-154 lbs.

Ryan Rhodes must be crying himself to sleep.

What's with the sudden love for Matthew Hatton. GBP Richard Schaefer now saying they will throw him in against the winner of berto v Ortiz. He reckons Hatton will be a world champ within a year.

Granted I didn't see the fight at the weekend but I've seen hatton fight maybe 10 times before on sky Friday fight night or whatever but I've never thought he was world class. European level at most.

They were probably impressed with the interest and money he brought in from the UK.
