Does anybody know the answer to the following question?

What happens if Independents win a overall majority, And who becomes taoiseach of the country??

Have asked all the politicians that have come to the door so far and not one of them can give an answer

I think a hung parliament occurs but still not fully sure as to what this means

Be interesting to see peoples views on this matter

They'd all have to figure out which of them want to work with each other. Independents have a very broad spectrum of views and policies and many of them would be incompatible with each other. What would probably happen would be that a number of them would cluster around the party policies of one of the largest parties and try to draw up a program for government. The outcome would largely depend on the political compass of individual independents. Depending on the actual numbers involved it is possible that an independent could become taoiseach. I think it would have to be a very well known independent with a strong history in politics, and since Tony Gregory died I don't think there's any other viable candidate out there.

I could not forsee this ever happening thb, but i would suspect that given the Independents are 'independent' then 'they' would not form a cohesive grouping to come together and propose a Taoiseach. Remember the Taoiseach is elected by the Dáil and is only proposed by parties/groupings in the Dáil. Could not see a time when the established parties would 'allow' an Independent Taoiseach to take the Office. Remeber a Taoiseach needs the support not only of the Dáil, but also of the Governemt (as we have seen very evidently recently), and I feel it would be highly unlikely for an Independent Taoiseach to be elected.

In saying all of the above, there is the theorethical possibility that the Independents could be the largest grouping in the Dáil with the Taoiseach coming from the minor party in the newly-formed Government. As I say, I can't atually see that happening at all in Irish Politics....and not sure if it has ever happened in other similiar democracies around the globe.

    Interesting thought though.....

It is an interesting thought and thats all it is as i genuinely never see it happening definitly not in this country but it would just be interesting to know if it did happen what is the official way forward with regard forming the government

An independent Taoiseach just would not work and frankly just could not be possible in my mind anyways
