Was lucky to catch him at AC/DC's gig at the Olympic Ballroom in late August 1979 when they were touring 'Highway to Hell'. They ripped through a shortish set and blew the crowd away. Including my eardrums.

They were supported at that gig by a rubbish group called DC Nein, touting themselves as a skinhead band. Some duckhead threw a Nazi flag onto the stage. Bon was in full flow, glanced down at the flag and the idiot, and carried on belting through his song. I wondered what he must have made of such a dumb and unexpected gesture at a gig in Ireland.

Bon Scott was pure AC/DC through and through. I'm reading Murray Engelheart's 'AC/DC: Maximum rock & roll' biog and have literally just finished the chapter dealing with Bon's unfortunate death. I remember the event well. AC/DC were well known to their fans, but had no widespread recognition at that point. His death was mentioned in the newspaper shorts. I was dumbfounded and so disappointed at his demise. What a loss.

    'Rock in Peace', Bon.

... the first AC/DC song I ever heard!

It was the opening track on the original UK issue of Powerage (the standard issue opens with Rock'n'roll Damnation). The moment I heard it, I knew I was going to like this band. Simple, forceful guitars, nice funky bit of bass, minimal lyrics, and a hi-hat being played like an instrument in its own right! And no manic Angus solo!!!

The next track on that UK issue was Downpayment Blues. After that I was hooked on AC/DC, bought my own copy of the album and duly wore it out!!

Incidentally, I listened to the Youtube clip on me laptop. Even low-fi the features of this deceptively simple song stand out. Malcolm's rhythm guitar out of the left speaker, Angus's unspectacular but effective stroking out of the right.

If pushed, I'd say this is probably my favourite AC/DC song.

And the UK/Europe version of Powerage also had the excellent Cold Hearted Man!!
