hi , we have a hotel booked for our wedding for this winter and i see the hotel have greatly reduced their prices. we have already paid a 1000 ,by credit card, non-refundable deposit but legally can they withhold it if we decide on a better deal somewhere else ? wedding still 9 mths away so hardly leaving then in the lurch !!

Maybe contact them and try to get them to reduce the agreed price with you. Tell them you will cancel and are prepared to lose your deposit if they don't reduce the prices.

However, check your contract - are you locked in to a binding contract for the full cost of the wedding. Could they chase you for this money?

i can see hoe a 'non-refundable deposit' seems pretty self explanatary but since this is payment for a function , if the function dosent go ahead all the are entitled to is costs etc. i think there was a legal clarification on this point and hoped someone might be in the know. i do want to see of we can come to an agreement but i need to know where both of us (hotel & us) stand in relation to monies already paid.i am hoping they are pretty good about it but they are in business and will seek the best price. where do i stand ?

Renegotiate with them. They make a lot more then 1k on a wedding so they wont want to lose the business but you wont get that 1k back if you pull out from what I understand.

if the function doesnt go ahead because you changed your mind, i cant see how you think you are entitled to your money back.

Of course they can withold it if you pull out - that's the whole point of a deposit!

The question is can you save more than the grand elsewhere? If you can, then either take the hit and lose the deposit or tell the hotel that that's what you're planning on doing unless they're willing to reduce the price of your wedding....
