Which Driver is in your bag?

What driver do you have in the bag, and what shaft/loft. Do you think you notice any reasonable distance or accuracy advantage over your previous model. If you had to change it for 1 other brand what do you think you would go for?
I am only recently returning to the game and not up to speed with the equipment and they have moved on enormously since I used play regular, would appreciate opinions.

used to have a R7 superquad 9.5 driver but got fitted and got a cleveland launcher 9.5 aldila shaft and have noticed serious difference with the driver. just hope it continues now... You should try get fitted...

I've been using the Ping G10 for a few years. Grafalloy ProLaunch Red shaft with 9 degree loft. It's just a very solid stick.

Dunno what I would get if I could have a new one in the morning. Wouldn't be that bothered changing. Tried the i15 when it came out and it's pretty much the same club. Hit the new R11 yesterday and it was just your usual TaylorMade thing in a different colour. Probably just stick with my own.

Did you know in advance you wanted the Cleveland or was it suggested to you as part of the fitting?

I heard it suggested the Ping does get best distances. Anyone using the Titleists. Whats the opinions of those.

I use the old model taylormade burner with regular shaft, the auld lad has the same with a stiff shaft, cant get the same height on that though. Both are 10.5. Also have some Orlimar drivers lying around, shafts are very flexy on them though..

I recently bought a new set of clubs and drivers to replace my McGregor irons and driver / woods which I got about 10 years ago.

The driver I got is a Mizuno MX700 10.5 with a regular flex Exsar shaft. The difference between it and my old club is amazing. My friend cannot get over the difference this club has made to my abilities.

I got MX100 irons and these too are much more forgiving and the confidence this brings is great for my game.

I only changed cause I thought that I'd gone as far as I could with the old clubs and that perhaps technology had moved on. I could never have imagined the difference that the new clubs could make.

I bought standard stuff with no custom fitting.

TM R7 Superquad 10.5 deg, Standard TM Reg Flex

Mate has the Titleist 910 D2, Blue Diamana 65g Stiff, and I've hit it a few times and really like it, getting custom fit/testing next week for everything, so will keep you posted.

Cobra ZL 10.5 with an Aldila Voodoo stiff shaft. Brought it to foregolf and all he changed was the grip. It's my first driver and I'm hitting it better than I'd ever thought. Lovely club.

I have a R9 460 11.5 degree. Previously had a 9.5 degree driver and after much frustration trying to keep it on the fairways I snapped and got an 11.5 degree. Best decision I ever made. Don't know how much of it is down to the increased loft or just the R9 driver itself being an easy club to hit but the driver is now one of my most reliable clubs. I just leave it set to neutral, don't mess with the adjustments and its spot on.

I have the same club. I have tried, out of curoisity more than anything else, several other latest and greatest drivres. Not one of them can out hit the Ping. I'll be holding on to if for a few years yet.

Had a TM R5 8.5 degree standard shaft and changed to a callaway FT9 draw with stock stiff shaft - recommended to me in shop. Made some difference to my game

All i done with my current driver is change the shaft of it - Play with a Titleist 909D2 Diamana Blue 65 Regular shaft now....previous shaft was a Aldila Voodoo Stiff... ridiculously hard to hit.

Alot better now..straighter around the 240-250 mark..a loss of 20-30 yards from the stiff but more accurate now and hitting low scores.:)

New driver technology breakthroughs are rare, you come to realise this when the new taylormade driver is painted white

    Check out <snip>

That is a good point. However Taylormade also claim the iron byron is hitting the white model 6 yards longer than least years model, which is a significant step forward. I am still very surprised at how forgiving and long the drivers are now compared to the 1990's when I used play.

I hit the ball reasonably long and fairly high, using a 10 degree, might go for a low loft. Am still only using the range as yet, but I guess the wind will move the drives alot on course, I seem to be hitting the drives as high as a lob wedge.

The Ping seems to be well liked here. I like the look of the Titleist too, so am narrowing my search to those 2. I hit the TM fairly well but can't say I particularly like the club either.

2 year old Taylormade Tour Burner

Being told a lot lately that I should switch to a stiff shaft - but I'm hittng this pretty well so I'm of the "if it's not broke mindset.."

Is there any appreciable difference between D2 and D3, what is it supposed to be, does Rory and the other Titleist tour pros use the D2 or the 3. And why did you chose the D3. I am starting to favour the Titleist woods, if I do change, hit a few older model Titleists and Callaways at the range the other day, hit them all straight but preferred the feel/look of the Titleist, think I would have more confidence of hitting it straight more often. Will also consider the Ping, haven't had the chance to wallop balls with them yet.

I would have thought more would be using Cobra, aren't they a popular model?

Titleist 902 D2 - not club I'd have gone for day 1, but got fitted in Fota & it had the best combination of spin rate & launch angle for me. Fota good for fitting as you can hit out into the range rather than a net while still using the equipment - personally I prefer to see the flight no matter what a computer says. I'm not sure if they fit without you buying a club - but it was free once I was buying there.

As for the cobra - personally the noise puts me off - don't think my eardrums would last a summer!!:):)

Adams Ovation 10.5 (think it was 79e or something similar in a sale) broke stock shaft not long after getting it and just got a shaft put in, didnt even ask what it was at the time, think its a regular flex with stiff tip or something similar, wont change it until the thing falls apart in my hand, love it

Nike Victory Red Tour, 9.5 deg with a Project x 6 shaft. Its a low spin shaft and head combo which suits my game. It produces a boring ballflight and is a great club in windy conditions. Also keep it covered with a Looney Toon Taz headcover:DWas playing with a Cobra HS9 F speed driver but found it had high spin numbers and would tend to baloon into the wind.

TM R7 9.5 degs with a stiff shaft. Never messed with the weights. It's a good club, gets it out there, and "sits right" at address.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,395 ✭✭✭Decoy

TM R9 SuperTri TP, Fubuki 63gram, stiff flex, 9.5deg. Weight in heel, adjustable shaft/clubhead set closed 1 setting.

I was using an R7 425 with Aldila NV65S for a few years and was very happy with it. However, in the last year I had noticed the distance I was losing compared to the lads I play with who had updated their big dogs. I actually won an R9 SuperTri TP (10.5deg, stiff Aldila) and it felt nice but I was hitting it far too high which doesn't suit links golf. As I liked the feel of that R9 I went to a TM fitting night and the spec above gave me the best ball speed/launch angle/spin rate numbers. My trajectory is much flatter now, far more under control and the result is that my bad swings are now still in play.

It is so worth spending some time/money getting fit properly. Most good club fitters will get you to try every shaft they have but some don't. Just because the first shaft you try gives you better results that your old driver doesn't mean it's the best choice for you, try EVERY shaft option and compare the numbers, if the numbers are similar for a couple of shafts then it's down to feel.

TM seems to be the favourite choice
prob easiest to hit for the high-handicappers so i'm not surprised

better than rocking up to the first tee with a ping or ram anyways

Callaway ft3, I had one when they first came out and loved it , but because I was greedy and stupid I got the ft5 in search of more length, didn't like that so got a titliest 907 didn't like that either, so now I'm back to the Ft3 .
Lesson learned "if it's not broke don't fix it".

have you passed the 150 yards mark yet?

do you regularly feel shame and embarrassment as you place your girly club back in your bag and take that short walk down the fairway to hit your second shot?

Conno, most of the guys on here are searching for the Bayhill 7 Iron to get them that elusive 150yds off the tee:D:D:D

I changed to a King Cobra M Speed LD, 10.5degree early last summer.

I'm really noticing a serious change in my driving since - hit all fairways in regulation last weekend, with only one slight error (combination of high wind and trying to bash the ar*e off the ball) recorded and am finally getting a bit of real distance on it.

All I need now is to sort out my mid-irons, my short-irons and my putting...;)

Ping G5 ... Love it .. Just cant afford to upgrade but dont think I'd actually want to !!:):)

I had a Ping G10 with Pro-Force Red Regular shaft, 10.5 degree. Just bought the thing because I assumed it would suit.

I went to American Golf with the view to changing it because I was having a woeful time with my driving - and got my swing speed and launch angles etc. checked with the view to getting a new driver. I had nothing in mind so was willing to buy and spend anything based on a recommendation from them.

In the end based on their recommendations, I 'upgraded' to an older model Taylormade Burner 10.5 degree with Regular shaft, which cost ½ what I paid for my G10. Kudos to them for recommending something so cheap when I was clearly willing to splash out. I've found it to be much lighter and easier to swing with so now I find I only need to swing back about ¾ what I used to and I'm still generating plenty of distance. Hitting it out of the center and straight now since last October. Best move I ever made.

I was browsing through the golf shops this week, the Ping drivers look and feel quite nice, didn't hit a ball with them but I would have confidence in it, not sure why the Ping remark. However the Ping irons look just horrible to my eye, an enormous flange on the bottom, like lump hammers, they really look like a raw beginners club.
I looked at the TaylorMade (the uncomplicated one without adjustments) without any real interest, don't like the white and just not a fan of TM, but their driver did feel the nicest to hold.
The Titleist 910 D3 is the club I was most interested in after reading various rave reviews and hitting some balls with an older Titleist very straight on the range. I was disappointed in the D3, didn't hit any balls with it, but it doesn't look right to me, I had heard the face is 0.5 degree open at the so-called square position but this is unnoticeable, well I must disagree with that, it looks clearly open to me, and I think I have ruled it out as a possible purchase.
I will probably go to Fota as some others have recommended and hit some balls with the various models before deciding, but after just looking and holding the various models, if I was to choose one now it would be the Taylormade despite it being fairly low on my list previously.

For those in Cork, how does Fota's shop compare on prices.
And for Ping users, is there any real difference between the G10, g15 and the i15? In both drivers and irons?

fota is fairly comparable with most places really.members get 15% off i think and they will usually do bit extra.so if you know a member then might work out cheaper than somewhere else.

Found fota the most expensive by about 200 euro when buying clubs last year. They will let you hit any club you want in american golf in wilton. Hooked me up to the swing analysis machine and measured swing speeds and told me what clubs suited me best. No obligation to buy but you prob will once you have spent half an hour hitting clubs in the practice bay. They are good on price as well.

The 910 series are adjustable. You can close the face if that's what suits you.

I want a club that is set dead-square. American Golf do have good selection and prices seem ok, so might go with them, but I would prefer to see the ball flight in the open, and as I am new back to golf I can't ask anyone with those drivers for a few bashes. I hit a Ping 3 wood and driving iron at the range recently, felt very nice.........decisions, decisions

As I read through this thread the thing that stands out is the amazing number of drivers that are on the market.I presume this is only the tip of the iceberg.I bought a Ping g15 at xmas having tried it out on the range first. No problem on the range but not going great on the course!!

What flex shaft did you get. I tried a few and thought the Ping felt the nicest of those I took some swings with, although I didn't try the new Titleist. The Pings are selling for around €260. Did you try the Pingi15, looks like a nice club, didn't take any swings with it though.
Is there any distance or feel advantage over your previous model, and what was that?
