MOD - THE PARTY MANIFESTOS ARE IN POST 5

Hey this might be of interest to any LGBT folks in the DNE area where Jimmy Guerin is running, I just recieved this response to some LGBT related questions I asked.

As a member of the LGBT community, I am very interested to hear your opinion on the subject of the rights of LGBT people to marry, and to have their families protected under law. Can you please clarify your position on the introduction of civil marriage (not civil partnership)

I fully support the rights of all people to choose their partner and their having the right to a civil marriage. I feel it is irrelevant that they are gay are heterosexual . This should not interfere with what I believe is a basic right.

and adoption rights for gay couples and non biological same sex partners? Will you support the abolition of section 37?

I believe that one a child is being adopted by a loving couple who are suitable for adoption then they should be allowed adopt. I do not believe that the status of the couple is relevant but would feel that there are both gay and heterosexual couples who for one reason or another may not be suitable

Are these his personal views? What party does he belong to? What's the point of this?

    he is an independent

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Sorry hotmail.com but there is a lack of information on the new independants in this constituency and I thought it might be helpful to some people.

I recieved responses from Blaney, Sexton and Greene as well if anyone is interested.

    Taken from

    http://www.mamanpoulet.com/manifesto-watch-lgbt-issues/

    Fianna Fáil - Nil

Fine Gael – No policy section on LGBT issues,

Party does not support civil marriage for same sex couples (checked via email)

Civil Partnership: We will amend tax law in a second Finance Act in 2011 to give effect to the rights for civil partners and cohabiting couples introduced in the Civil Partnership Act 2010.

Anti-bullying Policy: We will encourage schools to develop anti-bullying policies and in particular, strategies to combat homophobic bullying to support students.

    Labour

    LGBT rights

Labour is committed to holding a referendum to provide for constitutional recognition of samesex marriage. Labour also supports entitling all parties to a marriage or civil partnership to apply to adopt a child, while ensuring that all adoption decisions must be made in the best long-term interests of the child. In the immediate term, Labour will enact provisions to extend the tax benefits of marriage to same sex couples in civil partnerships.

Labour is committed to ensuring all publicly funded colleges operate in accordance with the constitutional right to Freedom of Conscience.

Labour will ensure the five teaching colleges introduce a Freedom of Conscience clause so that trainee teachers no longer are obliged to undergo compulsory religious education.

Labour will amend Section 37 of the Employment Equality Acts (1998) and (2004) to end discrimination against LGBT teachers and trainee teachers, and to ensure that there is no obstacle to schools tackling homophobic bullying.

Labour will continue to fund Gay HIV Strategies.

Labour will advance equality for trans-gender people by enacting gender recognition legislation, and by extending to them protections afforded by existing equality legislation.

    Green Party

    Same-sex couples

    The Green Party will:

In the event of the Supreme Court ruling against Zappone and Gilligan, seek to have the Constitution amended to permit civil same-sex marriage.
Seek to further reform family law in Ireland to protect the welfare of children in a variety of families, including providing for the extension of legal guardianship to de facto parents.

Ensure the continuation of the HSE-National Office of Suicide Prevention LGBT Mental Health Programme.

    Sinn Féin

Legislation to permit and recognise same-sex marriage. Provide full and equal recognition of all civil partnerships in law.

Labour wanting a referendum on civil marriage is a complete U-Turn. Disgraceful.

Talk about a referendum is moot until the KAL case is over, and the various parties know it. A lot of legal people, granted with vested interests, don't think a referendum is necessary. Also, there's nothing stopping the legislation being brought in -- even if it turns out to be unconstitutional, it can be overturned then (or, more likely, a referendum would be called). They're all delaying, yes even Labour and the Greens, in order not to alienate Maureen and Dinny from Ballygobackwards.

Is there much chance of Labour, Sinn Féin or Green Party being elected?
