Of course they're second tier, along with Galway and Waterford. No guesses needed on which teams are first.

    Are we actually discussing this???

They are, but it still smacks of sour grapes. He should fade into the background and be remembered for the great athlete he was.

He's just jealous that he wasn't as good as Aisake :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 802 ✭✭✭Rebel1977

Aisake was one of the worst players to ever wear the red jersey, sean og just just fade away now from the limelight and let Denis Walsh get on with his job

Because of the digital media times we lived in, and continue to live in, when Sean Og was at his peak with 24/7 coverage of every sport under the sun, hurling included the big stars are always gonna come out with statements that are invariably gonna draw a reaction from fans involved, good or bad. O Hailpin is still a big name where headlines are involved so yer not gonna see the end of him for a while in that regard.

+1. I cant see any teams really competing with Tipp and Kilkenny in next 5 years and Cork's recent underage teams havent had much success so they will probably be 2nd tier for a while

5 years is an age in hurling terms, the likes of galway and waterford are well capable of competing. Kilkenny and tipp are pretty far from invincible. Tipp performed well in last 2 all irelands but have looked vulnerable at times in other matches.

Kilkenny have a few living on reputation like Brennan and larkin and the replacements in the forwards don't look as good.

The championship will be pretty open over the next few years.

Cork a second tier team? Don't be ridiculous. They are not that good. :D

No use comparing Galway with Waterford, we're gone ahead of ye at this stage. Significantly ahead at senior level and vastly superior at underage.

The first tier in hurling has now increased from 9 to 10 teams with the emergence of Dublin.

Sean Og is just having a stab because he's obviously a bit hurt about being dropped, and to be honest I'm not sure why Denis Walsh did drop him because he still has plenty to offer. Maybe internal politics came into it.

Cork have a huge huge pick and Meelin and Ballymartle have just won club all Ireland's so the talent is in the county. i think they will be ok.

I wouldn't doubt for a second that Cork will be back. Only a matter of time. They are heading into a rebuilding phase, like any team that has had success there comes a time when a new crop of players have to be blooded. You don't replace the likes of Diarmuid O'Sullivan, Sean Og etc overnight. But I have no doubt Cork will be back sooner rather than later.

Richie has been around a few years but other than himself and tj reid there hasn't been much on the senior panel from the last 3 or 4 years considering all the underage success we have had.

Colin Fennelly looks like he has potential but I think in the next 5 years kilkenny will have much stronger backs than forwards.

I could be proved wrong but I don't think the next generation of forwards are quite as good as what we have seen over the last 10 years.

he has been around a while, but he is still only 22. that is still extremely young in hurling terms. he is a class player, and despite KK not having 'much' coming through, they still only need to produce one player every second year to keep at the top. and they have that in abundance. may not be as good as the last 10 years, but sure Shefflin wasnt really talked up as a minor or anything either and look how he turned out for ye!

Thats the problem though, going back to the tried and tested experienced players because the lads they were trying out were useless, of the six forwards that started yesterday Pat Horgan and an aging Ben O'Connor are the only ones that look up to intercounty hurling

Also, Michael Cussen must be the worst intercounty hurler out there at the moment, i live in wicklow and he'd be hard pushed to make the senior team here! People criticize Aisake but he's twice the player that Cussen will ever be, i watched Cussen for all of his 35 minute performance yesterday and literally (genuinely, actually, seriously) the only touch of the ball he got was a long puck out that almost landed in his hand but, alas, he somehow managed to fumble it, he gave up the football because he wasnt really coordinated enough for it and now he's playing a game that requires twice as much skill and coordination, logic?

Agree on Cussen - not related to an inter county hurler. Pa Cronin will be around in the summer, Horgan is always dangerous, McCarthy is all huff and puff, Cian McCarthy ( Teddy's son) should be there or there abouts, O'Sullivan has potential, O'Connors will still be there and that's our forwards! The few new boys need to start scoring from play.
The defence is in reasonably good shape when all are available. We are still capable of causing an upset in the championship when it gets to the knock out stages but we need to get more scoring forwards blooded!!

Agree 100%. Kilkenny will always produce good players, I wouldn't doubt that the next crop are rolling off the production line as we speak. You don't get too many hyped up minors in Kilkenny because they're all good and even a young Shefflin wouldn't stand out the way he might in another county.

Shame about their footballers though, they're a sorry bunch.

On topic of Cork, I predict they will win a hurling All-Ireland again within 5 years, probably before our lads do unfortunately.

Totally meaningless wrt the senior intercounty side. Meelin had no intercounty player at any level for Cork. Ballymartle will be lucky to have 1 senior panellist.

ok maybe not as individual clubs but in an overall sense it cant be bad for the county to have clubs even at the lowest levels competing for honours

I agree. How dare he publicly support a charity event. Truly, this sort of thing just isn't on.

You might want to get beyond the quarter finals one of these years before you get too excited about Galway's seniors.

Galway significantly ahead of Waterford!?? Where are you getting that from?

maybe slightly ahead ... but in a Waterford v Galway championship match .. I'd still fancy Waterford to beat Galway 6/10 times ...

& btw I'm not having a go at Galway ... I'd love to see them win an all-Ireland .. It's some mystery what ye do with all those minors!?

What's your game here. Seán Óg was shafted by Frank Murphy. Everyone in Cork knows that. He didn't say that last year because people in sport and in life in general don't tend to want to be publicly criticise teams they are a part of! Besides, you could argue it's an honest assessment made by an honest man who has been a hero of the game and may be in the future if the right man gets the job at the end of the year. The losses to Wexford and Dublin only enhance his point I'm afraid...

Almost as much as you love the smell of your own bull****. Which Cork County Board executive are you being paid off by out of interest?

Have some understanding. Whatever your opinion on his freedom to speak, do you accept that he was a top hurler and was shafted by Frank Murphy?

Im not douting him as both a footballer and a hurler im just saying i dont think he has to go to the paper everytime he thinks he's been wronged. Alot of big name players dont give interviews at all they do there talking on the pitch
