A friend of mine is sick. Does Charismatic healing work? Does any healing work. I am not religious and know little of these things

They're liable to make the person feel better/happier which is always a good thing. They don't do much else.

Prayer and such are always good. If you are healed through prayer then that is good. Surely it is worth a try.

I wouldn't be so negative. There are plenty of examples of charismatic prayer groups resulting in physical and spiritual healing. And it doesn't have to be charismatic. Basically you pray to Jesus (with faith) and he does the healing. Sometimes the person is sick for a good reason , eg it might bring that individual to a closer union with God. So if you don't get an instant miracle don't think you have wasted your time. God will use your prayers elsewhere.

If you want to learn more I recommend this article about Sr Briege McKenna http://www.childrenofmary.net/srbriege.shtml

and this brief video gives a glimpse of her

I have seen a number of people healed after prayer in charismatic services, and a whole lot more that haven't been healed.

    .

This part stuck out to me. I did a training session for a ministry called Healing on the Streets - there we learned the difference between supplicative and authoritative prayer. When Jesus healed he didn't say 'please father heal this person' - he said 'be healed'. He used his authority. Now, if we have the same Spirit then we also have that authority - obviously it is not us who heals but the Spirit of God and He is sovereign, so some are healed and some aren't.

Sorry to hear about your friend. Get the most of the health service, that's the best you can do today.

However if we are talking about Christianity, what might work for your friend is faith on Christ and his victory over Death. What won't work is treating healing as some sort of magic that we can use when we are sick. This would be delusion and delusion = more sickness.

Even when God himself walked on Earth very few were healed. Sickness, pain and death were still all around Him same as they had been before because it's just unavoidable. What Christianity is about is converting death into life and sickness into health but it is not about eliminating sickness and death by magic.
