    Hi all.

Quick question. Has anybody managed to get the mheg5 running on these models by selecting a different country on setup?

    Not an option.

Only country that could possibly turn that on is UK.

Panasonic have a specific model for the UK, the "B" series ie G20B.

G20L listed as the Irish model does not have MHEG5. It does have MHP which is very handy if you plan on bringing your plasma on holidays to France.

I see the price of Panasonic **G20B TVs has come down a lot. Does anyone know if these sets have DVB-S2 tuners or only DVB-S1. The reason for asking is that CH4 HD is due on air soon and it will use DVB-S2.

All HD Freesat stuff has to have DVB-S2 - it's part of the spec.

I tried to check the spec on the Panasonic website, but they are very coy on exact specs.

It's quite clear in the specs unless you're looking somewhere else..referring to the G20, that is.
This TV is designed to meet the standards (current as of August, 2009) of DVB-T/C/S/S2 (MPEG2 and MPEG4-AVC [H.264]) services.

Edit: S20 specs are also pretty clear here.

    No it's not.

Cut and pate from Panasonic site you reference above.

    TV Tuner

    Integrated Tuners***PAL-I, DVB-T/T2/S

    No mention of S2.

Maybe it is S2, but they do not say so.

You mean do they only have DVB-S or DVB-S2 tuners ?

DVB-S2 is a spec requirement for Freesat HD - although they arent using DVB-S2 at the moment - I think Freesat are still using the DVB-S platform despite broadcasting HD using the H264 codec.

Yes is the Answer. Likewise the terrestrial tuner is DVB-T2 for Freeview HD. Again there shouldnt be problems, but Panasonic do make strange interprestations of the the UK spec that others havent. So the terrestrial side might have some nasty surprisesn down the line.

If you do buy one and have problems Panasonic will not want to know as you are in Ireland.

Well, Freesat will be using S2 in the next while as CH4 HD will be using S2 on Freesat. As I said above, Pansonics spec for this TV does not include S2, I do not know why they would keep it secret. They say it has T1, T2 , and S but no mention of S2.

Why do UK specs not give the full story?

    Follow the asterisks.

It is a requirement to have dvb-s2 platform tuner for Freesat HD in order to get certification.

The problem if any will be terrestrially. The question you asked about UK specs not giving the full story is - interpretation by manufacturers.

UK DBook has and is the spec for Freesat/Freeview/Freeview HD.

The effect of that interpretation has already been seen in the wild with the Panasonic PZ81/LZD81, G10/15/V10 series which only defined service specs for SD terrestrial material despite the capabilities of the processor and H264 chip on board for Freesat HD.

An interpretation not shared by Sony and LG in their Freesat HD Combo models.

The reason that the G20s are available at that price is due to the release of the new Samsung Freesat Combo range next month. There have also been countless problems with the Panasonic Freesat ranges in the UK with iplayer not being supported or not being fixed either to support.

Freeview HD spec on the tuner in the g20 range should be okay for Saorview, but I wouldnt second guess Panasonic!!!

In fact reports suggest they don't care if you are in UK.

Years ago in place I worked, the Service Manager called them Panachronic.

I've never understood the enthusiasm for their stuff. They are only better than Sony, LG, Samsung etc in the minds of Reviewers, who have been largely useless as a resource for the last 30 years.

I am not talking about the G20S, I am talking about the G20B that has Freesat HD and Freeview HD.

In their spec, Panasonic do not claim that it has S2 capability. If it has it, which apparently it should, they do not claim it to have.

This business is so turgid, filled with obscurites and depends on accurate details, particularly in specs.

In the astericks, they do not claim T2, which they do at the top, but claim S2 which they do not claim at the top. More confusion. Is it so hard to do something properly. Sorry, this is Painosonic we are talking about.

I have bought Sony (V. happy) and LG (v. happy) but not the others.

I think the G20B would be a perfect solution if it were made by Sony, Freeview HD and Freesat HD, plus PVR (sort of).

Anyway, the temptation has moved away for now.

You know you had me scratching my head to where you got G20S from. I was always talking about the G20B model (I referred to it in my explanation as "G20s" as in plural!

    There is no G20S model!

Again all "Freesat HD" products must have a dvb-s2 tuner in order to be compliant and get the certified logo.

Sorry, I did not recognise the significance of the lower case 's'.

I think that the Panasonic make such a huhah about the B in the model, because only residents of GB are allowed to buy them, and anyone else who does will be deprived of any support, that I wanted to make sure I was talking about that particular model.

I know they are also quite certain that they will not support anyone this side of the water whichever model they buy, but there you go.

Honestly, they do not support UK purchasers either.
