It's 4am, the godearthly hour when the noise goes off in the corner of the room. He rises, half stupified to face another day. His brain is trying to make reason as to why he is doing this, but through automation he goes through the process.
When the dawn breaks he is far away, while his family sleeps blissfully unaware. And as the day goes on, he does what he has to do in order to earn his daily bread. He arrives home expecting to find a warm welcome but they are so caught up in their own world as to be oblivious.
And so the daily grind continues, another cog in the wheel. How different it was when he was starting out, stars in his eyes, a vision of beautiful things, things that might have been different than that which went before.
But now he realises that nobody escapes the prison that is life, that while we may be theoreticaly free, in essence we are just one more number in the great statistical game.
And at the end of the day as he seeks some solace in sleep his anguished soul cries out to be free.
