    Hi,

I can't afford to go and get my hair done in the hairdressers this month.

I normally just get blonde highlights though my hair to brighten up my hair (natural colour is a mousey brown/blonde hair)

I was going to try and put a colour in myself

Can anyone recommend what I should do?

Can you get highlighting packs ? (I've looked in my local chemist and there are so many different ones I hadn't a clue!)

Or does an all over colour work just as good?

    Thanks!

Well I've never highlighted my hair at home, or ever really, but I've seen results on other people and they've never been very pretty... Kind of messy looking, so personally I probably wouldn't dare highlight my own hair unless I really knew what I was doing.
My natural hair colour is a mousy brown like yourself, it's been dyed a lot... But recently I did it at home for the first time in a while. I went from a light brown (which I for some reason felt was too dark at the time?!) to an even lighter brown, blonde some people call it. I didn't even mean to go blonde, I bought blonde dye thinking that it would just lighten my brown a tiny bit, but boy I was wrong. Results were grand though, got my friend to do it. I hated it for the first few days but then after washing it again I was very happy with it... I used Nice N Easy if that's any help... (:

If you're unsure ask the person at the counter that's what I do when I'm stuck they can be very helpful and they also give you handy tips.

Make sure you do an allergy test before dying your hair.

Be very careful using a home bleach kit on already highlighted hair as it could burn your hair

home highlight kits are ok, used em myself, but you NEED someone there with you otherwise you'll be all over the shop :)

I've used home highlighting kits, too, and found them good. However, as a previous poster mentioned, it's better if you have somebody around who can help you out, or preferably do it for you. It can be a little tedious trying to use the highlighting cap on your own.

That said, it is possible to highlight your hair without one of those caps. I've done my mum's hair a few times, and it turned out fine.

However, before you start, make sure you do a test or two and a few strands of hair to see how long it takes for your hair to 'turn' colour. The last thing you want is to end up a much, much lighter colour than you wanted. Also, if in doubt, err on the side of caution.

    Best of luck!

Agree with what other posters have said. You'll need someone there with you to help.

Would you consider going to one of the student salons? They offer cheaper prices.
