...well, not to me at any rate.

...went out the M6 to Loughrea today, to drop off paperwork for my Tachograph driver's card, and, on leaving the motorway at Loughrea, came across 2 x GTC (bikes) on a checkpoint.

They had several cars pulled over, one being lifted onto a flatbed, and one on the dolly, behind........I pass through, unhindered.......

...some, oh, 500m or 600m down the road, I see 2 young lads walking on the hard shoulder, into the setting sun, so I pull over, and offer a lift (I was as curious nosey as hell, really.........:D.........

So, they get in (in their late 'teens, I'd say), and asked them if the car being lifted was theirs: it was. No tax, or insurance he tells me, and some flim-flam about 'just after buying it 'cos other car broke down....'......

I drop them off in town - 5km's from where they were given their marching order's btw........

15 minutes later I'm heading back the same way, GTC still there, but now, now they seemed to have taken.......5 ? cars........all parked up. And then I spot the lad's car from earlier...........Rover 400, on the flatbed and.....the 04....UK reg......

...wow. Tax, Insurance, VRT, Towing, Fine, Penalties, Storage..........not a great day for them really, was it ?

Sounds that way, shame id like to think if someone was caught driving with no insurance they would end up getting a lift back in to town from the cops.

In a normal country you would be arrested. Here they seize your car and hope to get some cash off you. I'm not sure what's best really?

A lift? No problem, lads. Hop up on the (non-existent) pillion there. You won't need a helmet, sure it's only 5km. Ah no, maybe I'd better call the sergeant and have him send the car out, just to be safe, like.

...oh yeah: I'd forgotten that: they were on 'bikes !! :D

btw, the point of my post wasn't about them walking, but it did give me the opportunity to find out, from the horses mouth, as it were, the true story, and that every now and then the GTC take no prisoner's (sic) :p

So that's where they are and I thought they had gone extinct :P

As for the chav's after you got the info off them you should've made em get out and walk. They are part of the reason we are all paying through the nose for insurance.

'Dad, I want to join the police force when I grow up'

'That's great son. Is it to catch bad people and make the streets safe from bad people?'

'No. I want to be a mobile tax collector. Bertie's pension doesn't pay for itself you know.'

They had no tax and insurance as such the Gardai were doing a great job taking them off the road.

If your ok with idiots like this on the roads then thats fine I would hope you encounter one of them on your travels and they hit into you and then see how much fun it is.

Great to see cars/bikes been taken off people for this type of crap (no tax, unsurance etc), now if only they'd also do it to learner drivers driving on their own the world would be a better place :)

There's too much of the "ah sure your breaking the law, sure drive on and pay the fine"

Fair point and there's no point clogging up the jails. You go have to feel sorry for the cops though. All that training and left to act as bailiffs to pay for the ruined system. Time for a revolution?

...the point is: there is no point. It's merely reporting of facts, as found, from horses (outside!) mouths: i.e. people are out there driving around thinking they won't get caught, and if they do, they'll get off lightly. These guys, didn't.

Also, that GTC are active. If you pull the piss, they'll go the whole 9 yards.

My own personal experience is that for small transgressions, they're amenable. YMMV and all that.

Oh, and that yes, they don't provide alternative transport/taxi if you lose the vehicle......

You hear so many stories 2nd/3rd/4th hand - this one is first hand.

    That's about it, really.

From this thread it appears they could be doing a lot better.

 you took me up wrong "Charlie" the :P is at the lack of GTC in this fine country of ours they are disappearing you just don't see them anymore. I was also commenting on it in this post around the same time and obviously my fingers didn't transfer what I was thinking into the type for this post.

    Not at the report.

P.S. do you wear a flak jacket and helmet whilst reporting :)

The main purpose of a dedicated traffic cop is to police traffic that's what they are trained in. If they increased their numbers instead of increasing the number of camera vans the roads would be populated by safer and for the most part law abiding road users. Paying tax, insurance not behaving like planks because they know they will be caught.
