[Info] Confused about when to apply.

I'm in 5th year, and I'm confused about applying for college accommodation. My careers teacher says we have to apply now to have any chance of getting a place, but a girl in school says she phoned the UCD admissions office and they said that you dont apply for accomodation until after you've been accepted. That seems to make more sense to me, than having to put down nearly 4 grand worth of deposits now, and end up losing 300 of that in cancellation fees.
So can anyone clear this up for me? Is it the same for all colleges, or is UCD just different?

This time last year, our daughter was hoping to head to either UCC or UCG.

I made a booking for Victoria Lodge in Cork in February and only managed to get her on the waiting list for Gort na Corribe at that time. She got a place in UCC and is now in Vic Lodge.

I booked her into University Hall for 2nd year, this week (booking opened on Wednesday).

My suggestion would be to look at the individual accommodations on-line and see when the booking starts. Our experience is that you will get your deposit back if you don't get a place. And you are better booking your accommodation of choice as early as possible because it certainly will be very difficult once the results come out.

    Oh dear....
In that case does anyone know if there's any assistance for students who can afford to pay deposits?

With ucd you can't get onto the list for campus accommodation until June of the year you are applying. I don't think there is any money required until you get your college offer and are actually booking the room, if thats a help to you.

You all seem to be overlooking the option of renting a house for yourself or to share with other students,
I'm a landlord that rent to students in cork city. I advertise in july/ august for the school year-sept 1st to 31st may- and take a months rent and a months security when they move in,they pay into my bank account every month and i have no contact with them unless they need me to fix or replace something.
So you have plenty of time to look around if you're not booking into the big blocks of student accomadation.

Well I've never been away from home alone for more than a weekend before, and pretty much all my friends are planning on going to Maynooth or Limerick, neither of which I've applied to, so for me its not really an option. I don't know who I'd rent with, and I'd be worried I'd get scammed very easily by the less savory landlords, being all young and naive.
I also really want to get to experience student accommodation. I think it would be a good way to meet other students.

Considering this thread is about accommodation, cant help laughing at your location, Gnie.:D
Seriously though, you are well ahead if you are finding out about accommodation now, when your'e still only in 5th year.

Yeah that's how it is in my school too. So I will be going to college next year, hopefully.

Ah I see,I thought you had another year, o.p, sorry. It can be confusing alright as no 2 colleges seem to have the same process or time frame for application for campus accommodation. Hope you get the course you want, anyway.:)
